Growing Pains and your Child

By Nicky Pilkington

Growing pains does occur in around 25 percent to 40 percent of all children. It is most often seen between the ages of 3 to 5 and then again between 8 to 12 years of age. However, this is not carved in granite. Any child can have growing pains prior to a growth spurt.

These leg pains are normally stronger after your child is physically active and your doctor advise you to give him something for the pain such as Tylenol or Motrin and that may be the extent of his advice.

The pain that your child can experience with growing pains will more than likely be in the front of their thighs, in their calves or behind their knees. The joints do not hurt. Leg pains are usually felt more at night or evening just about bedtime. The pain is not felt every day and the intensity varies from one child to the next. Some children have severe pain at night that does wake them from sleep, while others do not. Pains brought on from growing like other illnesses can affect each child differently as to the exact location of the pain and the intensity.

If you notice that the joints are swollen or red then you must visit a doctor, there are not physical signs of growing pains. Growing pains does not have any type of distinguishing symptoms other than pain in the legs. Your child will not run a fever or hurt any place else besides the ones mentioned above. If you notice other symptoms such as fever, or red and swollen joints, then this could be something more serious and you should take your child to the doctor for an evaluation.

Some of the best ways to help your child when growing pains occur is to massage the area, have them stand up and stretch, use a heating pad, another home remedy is to use a moist towel warmed in the microwave. You can also give Motrin or Tylenol for severe pain that is keeping your child from sleeping.

Headaches in a Child Are Quite a Pain

By Richard Romando

Causes of Headaches in a Child There are numerous reasons why a child may get a headache. One thing which is most important to know is his family history. It is generally found that, the ailments in the ancestors are passed on to the generations. So there are chances that child might get headache due to heredity .This is especially true for girls since the majority of people who suffer from migraines are females. Another reason for headaches in children is head injuries. If your child has a head injury, then it is advisable to pediatrician or doctor regarding it. This is very necessary for proper treatment and medication. Many a times, medication and ignoring consultation with doctor, result in making childs condition worse.

Environment and Allergies Sometimes the environmental changes also instigate headaches. These changes may include changes in the weather, bright lights, strong smells, dehydration, improper sleep and excessive loud noises. Stress, whether due to homework or any other family problem, can also be a reason for headaches. It is always good to spend ample time with the child and discuss about his problem. Sometimes child may be tensed about petty issues which can be eased out by discussing. You should also make sure that your child doesnt have a food allergy which is also major cause of headaches. Easing the Pain of Anxiety Separation

By Joanne King

Even though there is nothing you can do to make leaving your child less painful for you, there are some ways to make it less painful for your child. One thing that you can do is, gradually start leaving your child with a grandparent or sitter, maybe for only an hour or so at first, gradually building up to longer periods of time. If your child will be staying with someone new, invite that person over to your home first for a 'play date', so that your child can start getting used to them in a familiar environment, with you at the ready in case there is a problem. Before taking your child to his first day of preschool or daycare, it might help if you schedule a few visits that you can the child can both attend, to gave him/her time to adjust to the new situation first, so that he wont have to deal with being away from you and a new environment with strangers all at the same time.

In most cases, children will start to suffer from separation anxiety at around eight months of age, so it is not a good idea to make changes at this time if there is any way to avoid them. By the time your child has reached one year of age, separation anxiety will start to ease up somewhat, and it will be easier for your child to adjust to new people and situations. When you have to leave your child with someone else, it will be much easier if you do it when he has just had his nap and a full meal. A hungry, tired child is likely to be cranky already, and you leaving will only make a bad situation much, much worse.

If you tell your child that you will return at a certain time, make every effort to do so. By doing this, your child will soon start to learn that if you say you are coming back for him that you always will. He will learn that he just ahs to be away from you for a short time, and then you will return for him. If you ever one time have to come late, or have to send someone else in your place, it will only make the childs separation anxiety worse, so try to avoid it if you can.

It will be hard to leave your child at first, especially if she is hanging onto your leg and begging you to stay. But, in most cases, once you are gone, the child usually will calm down in a short time, and find something else to interest herself with. If it makes your day go better, call and check in with the caregiver later in the day, just to make sure that everything is okay, and that the child still isnt upset. Then you can go about your daily business without worrying about your child being miserable without you.

Dont let your child know that you are nervous about leaving her too, kiss her, hug her, tell her you love her, have a great day, and that you will be back later to get her. Make sure she understands that you promise that you will be back, and try to tell her what time you will be there. To make it easier for her to understand, tell her that mommy will be back to get you after naptime, or after you play outside. Dont drag things out any longer than necessary, no matter how hard it is for you not to hang around. Once you leave, dont come back in later to make sure everything is okay, just go. It may make it easier for you to call and check on your child, or to instruct your caregiver that if she cries for more than fifteen minutes, to please call you. The only way you and your child will get over separation anxiety is by dealing with it, no matter how painful it may be.

In the event you find yourself caring for a child who is suffering from separation anxiety, try to distract him with fun activities, such as songs, games, toys, or outside play. It may take some time and effort on your part, but you will eventually have the child concentrating on playing with you, instead of on his missing parents. Dont talk about the parents while they are gone, as this will only bring back the fact that they are gone.

Separation anxiety is hard for the children, parents, and caregivers involved. It takes time and practice to get easier, but know that over time, it will get easier for all parties involved.

Birthing Pains Of Child Adoption

By Robert Thatcher

Well perhaps 'happily every after' is subjective and means something different to different people. But whatever happens after you ride off into the sunset and disappear into the horizon, your married life will eventually have to make room for the little pitter patter of tiny feet. Right?

The next day

Well there are quite a few married couples who realize that for one reason or another, they cannot bear children together. Some married couples try for years to get pregnant, try all the fertility treatments (mainstream and alternative) and still come up empty handed.

There are also some married couples who either married too late or waited too long so they reach the stage of past child-bearing age and suddenly, they feel they want a child. Then there are still some couples who have their own children and yet they feel the need to spread their joy and love further to other children still.

How ever different these three scenarios are, there may come a point in their lives when they will come across the life altering question they need to ask themselves, 'Am I ready to adopt a child?'

The scarlet letter

Child adoption is a big step in a married couples lives and may be one of the biggest decisions they will have to make together that have a long lasting impact in their lives. Having children is a big responsibility in itself and child adoption brings with it its own set of sensitivities.

For all the right reasons

If you a childless married couple who have come to the end of their ropes in the hopes of conceiving, please take into consideration that child adoption isnt necessarily the answer to your problem. Continued unsuccessful attempts at trying conceive can greatly strain a married couples relationship and it can test even the strongest of the strong.

At the point where you seem desperately grasping at straws, you might think of adopting a child to keep the marriage together. But think it through thoroughly because you are bringing in a new life into yours and it wouldnt be fair to adopt under these circumstances. Remember, adopting a child doesnt mean that all your problems will be solved. Adding a new member to your already chaotic relationship may even result in more harm than good.

Child Custody, The Painful Truth

By S. A. Baker

Child custody is not an easy choice. Whether attorneys and judges decide on who will get the child custody or if parents can come to an agreement on their own, someone is going to lose. There are specific laws with very stringent guidelines about child custody. The bottom line is not who should have rights to child custody, but who is going to provide the best environment and upbringing for the child. Therefore, child custody cases can become difficult, confusing, and even frustrating. The bottom line is that for every child custody case, there needs to be a qualified child custody attorney behind it.

What are you to do then when faced with child custody issues? If you are in this situation, you will need to find qualified child custody attorneys to help you. And, you will also want to find a good amount of research about what child custody processes are like in your area. One great place to stop and take a look for some of this information is a website at www.thesmartattorneys.com. There, you will find quite a bit of information regarding child custody and possibly find qualified child custody attorneys in your area.

No, child custody battles are not easy. They are complex and often leaves someone hurt. Each state has its own set of rules governing child custody laws. Many times, children are placed with biological parents first. But, the end result will be a judge trying to decide what the best place for that child is. In child custody battles, parents will have to decide why they believe the child should be with them. Things like money, housing situations, and how they react with the child.

Child custody cases happen every day. If you are one of the people who are affected by a child custody case, you will want to do some research. Websites like www.thesmartattorneys.com offer information to help point you in the right direction. You should prepare yourself first, though, with qualified attorneys who can help you and the child find the best solution. In the end, every child custody case is about the child's well being.

How to Help When Your Disabled Child is being Teased

By ElmerFizz

Of course theres not much that can be done about rejection but there are a few things you can do that may curtail the teasing or at least lessen the hurt caused by others…

Talk to their teacher, school principal, or camp director: Although there are a few children who are simply insensitive by nature, many just dont stop to think about the impact that their behavior may have on others. By making your concerns known and suggesting that they point out to the guilty children the tremendous pain thats being caused and the long-term effects of teasing; some of them may have a change of heart and a few may even befriend the disabled child.

Talk to the parents of the guilty child: They may not be aware that their child has been teasing your child and may be ashamed that theyve been acting this way. They probably havent raised their child to be a bully and will be eager to put a stop to it right away.

Build your childs self esteem: As the parent of a disabled child you may be prone to overprotect them. If so, try to stop. Allow them to do what theyre capable of on their own–even if they make mistakes–and only help out when its truly necessary.

Remind them often how much loved and wanted. Also of great importance: let them know that you LIKE them as a person and enjoy having them around!

If a child has a healthy view of him or herself in spite of being disabled, the teasing wont have near as much impact on them. Sure it will still be painful but it wont be devastating.

Help them find ways to keep busy: A disabled child may tend to get bored since they cant always do what other children can. Boredom leaves the mind open to replaying painful events so you want to help them avoid this as much as possible.

Occasionally introduce new activities for them to try. Of course a great many wont hold any interest for them but eventually theyll find something intriguing that might even become a passionate hobby!

Mesothelioma Research

By Richard Romando

Symptoms of mesothelioma take a long time to develop, which is a major reason for the high fatality rate. Symptoms include shortness of breath, difficult breathing, and pain in the chest or abdominal cavity. Chest pains indicate that the disease is aggravating the nerve cells in the tissues, and has reached a serious stage. Less severe chest discomfort and shortness of breath are generally due to the accumulation of fluid between the two layers of the pleura.

Mesothelioma of the abdomen can have symptoms of abdominal pain and swelling. Other symptoms include cough, fatigue and unexplained weight loss.

As chest pain, shortness of breath or abdominal pain are symptomatic of several diseases, tests are required to identify the cause. These tests vary depending on the symptoms and may include an electrocardiogram (EKG), and a chest or abdominal X-ray. If abnormalities are seen, a CT scan or an MRI scan is taken. These tests help determine the size, location and extent of a possible tumor.

Fine-needle aspiration may also be given. In this procedure, a thin needle is used to remove a small sample of the fluid in the abdomen or lungs for examination. A biopsy is also taken through a thoracoscopy or video-assisted thoracoscopy (VAT), or through a led laparoscopy. Here, a tube-like instrument inserted through a small incision gives a view of the tumor and collects a tissue sample. A bronchoscopy or a mediastinoscopy may also be done. This enables the doctor to look for other masses of tumors in the lungs or to take tissue samples from lymph nodes.

Mesothelioma provides detailed information on malignant mesothelioma, asbestos and mesothelioma, mesothelioma, mesothelioma research and more. Mesothelioma is affliated with Malignant Mesothelioma Diagnosis.

Forgiveness

By CDMohatta

To talk about forgiveness is easy, and to forgive is difficult. Many a times it becomes impossible for some of us. For example if I am a mother. A criminal kidnaps my child and then slowly kills my child in my presence to derive sadistic pleasure, how will I feel? What about the cries of pain of my dying child? Will my mind forget them? What of the helplessness that I felt? What about the expectation with which my child looked at me and felt sure that mother would do something to save him/her? What of the helplessness I felt? What about the memories of bringing up my child? What about the dreams that I had? What about the pain and torture my child underwent while dying?

My nightmares will haunt me forever. Anything that belonged to my child will bring the memories of death back like a wave. My sadness will overwhelm me forever and my silent fury against my own weakness will kill me. Can I ever forgive that man? Can I ever forget that act after pardoning him? Will you?

This is the most difficult part of forgiveness. It becomes impossible to forgive. The scars go so deep that even after the man is sentenced for the crime, the mother will never feel complete. No amount of punishment given to that man will ever bring the child back. No clock will ever turn back. The pain that the child underwent cannot be taken away at all. I am doomed to live in misery forever unless I forgive. But I cannot forgive. I know that many people will come and ask me to forgive. What if they underwent something similar? Will they forgive? Mesothelioma - The Silent Assiassin

By Bob Miles

Mesothelioma afflicts the abdomen and chest. It usually results from asbestos exposure. In fact, over 90%25 of all cases result from this cause. This statistic scares to many people because of asbestos' presence in the insulation of so many buildings. Malignant cells appear in a protective lining covering the body's internal organs known as the mesothelium. Mesothelioma can be divided into three known forms: pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial. Contrary to what most people believe, there is no known cause and effect relationship between smoking and mesothelioma. Unfortunately, however, the lifetime risk of mesothelioma for those subjected to heavy asbestos exposure is thought to be as high as one in ten

- Mesothelioma symptoms might not show up until several decades after exposure. These symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, and swelling of the abdomen. Other symptoms that are specific to peritoneal mesothelioma may include fever, weight loss, anemia, bowel obstruction, and blood clotting abnormalities.

- If the cancer metastasized, the patient may experience various symptoms including difficulty in swallowing and swelling of the face and neck.

- Pleural mesothelioma has its own pathology-specific symptoms including hoarseness, coughing and wheezing, tumors, and lung collapse.

Of course, the foregoing symptoms are common to many different conditions, so there is no need to panic if you have them. Simply see your doctor and have a biopsy done.

Mesothelioma progresses 4 distinct stages.

Stage 1: The cancer is localized and the malignant mass can be surgically removed.

Stage 2: The cancer has metastasized beyond the lining of the chest cavity.

Stage 3: Metastis to the chest wall, the heart, and the diaphragm.

Stage 4: Mesothelioma spreads throughout the body.

Stages 2,3, and 4 are almost always terminal. In these cases treatment focuses on pain reduction. Hospice care is strongly recommended for patients in these advanced stages, because hospice care is focused on pain reduction rather than life extension, two goals which are frequently in opposition to each other.

Mesothelioma offers readers complete information about pleural mesothelioma, abdominal mesothelioma, and lung cancer.

Symptoms Of Mesothelioma - Early Detection of a Deadly Cancer

By Jennifer White

In most cases, people usually ignore the symptoms of Mesothelioma due to their generic nature. This is because the early symptoms of mesothelioma can also be the indication of other common diseases. Furthermore, researches have concluded that a patient with prior exposure to asbestos may develop mesothelioma much later in his/her life, i.e. after 20 to 40 years of asbestos encounter. Thus, many patients disregard the possibility of developing mesothelioma due to something that happened much earlier in their lives.

Mesothelioma is a cancer in which the protective linings of the body's internal organs get affected by malignant cells. These linings include:

*Pleura: the outer lining surrounding the lungs and chest cavity;

*Peritoneum: the lining of the abdominal cavity; and

*Pericardium: a sac holding the heart.

The symptoms of mesothelioma affecting these organs can vary due to the special nature and functions of the organs. Some of these symptoms are severe, and also some of the symptoms are rare. It is, therefore, recommended to contact a physician if the symptoms prevail.

Additionally, if mesothelioma is detected at early stages, the chances for a possible cure are high.

Following are the symptoms of mesothelioma, categorized by types:

Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms:

*Shortness of breath

*Coughing up blood

*Pain in chest

*Pleural effusions (fluid accumulation in the lung lining)

*Back pain

*Hoarseness

*Weakness

*Problem in swallowing

*Loss of appetite

*Weight loss

*Excessive coughing

*Swelling

*Paralysis

*Fever

In severe cases, a pleural mesothelioma patient can develop pneumothorax or lung cancer (lung failure). Nonetheless, some patients may show almost no symptoms.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma Symptoms:

*Swelling or mass accumulation in the abdomen

*Weight Loss

*Abdominal pain

*Bowel obstruction

*Blood clots

*Fever

*Nausea

*Vomiting

*Hernia

Pericardium Mesothelioma Symptoms:

*Chest pain

*Shortness of breath

*Cough

*Unusual heart beating

*Irregular breathing patterns

These symptoms of mesothelioma can also be the indications of other minor diseases. However, if diagnosed soon, these symptoms can help the doctors to cure the cancer at a primitive stage. Remember that only a doctor can confirm the presence of mesothelioma by examining medical reports, asbestos exposure history, MRI and/or CT scan. In some cases, a needle biopsy can also be conducted.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma - Know more; Suffer Less

By Fred Lindell

What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma can be defined as a rare form of cancer that affects mesothelium, the protective sac that covers most of the internal organs of the body. In this disease, the cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and they start dividing randomly. Mostly, the preliminary attack of Mesothelioma takes place in pleura or peritoneum and it is seen that majority of the Mesothelioma patients have a history of exposure to asbestos.

Mesothelioma's nexus with asbestos
Mesothelioma is a relatively rare form of cancer with a rate of about 2000 new cases per year in the US. Though there is no specific age or sex for Mesothelioma, aged men seem to be more prone to catch the disease. As 70%25 to 80%25 of the case histories of patients reveal, Mesothelioma has a strong connection with asbestos exposure.

Asbestos is a group of minerals, which occur naturally as masses of strong, flexible fibers. It is required in several industries namely cement, flooring products, textiles, etc. When the tiny particles of asbestos are inhaled or swallowed, they pose severe health related threats like increased risk of lung cancer, asbestosis, mesothelioma, etc. The combination of asbestos exposure and smoking habit often aggravates the risk.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma
One peculiarity of Mesothelioma is that it has a long latency period of about 15-50 years, which means that the symptoms of the disease may start appearing 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Moreover, Mesothelioma symptoms are often not specific i.e. they are same in case of several other diseases. This is why Mesothelioma tests are very important to dispel the incidence of the disease if relevant symptoms crop up.

Speaking of symptoms, there are three prominent symptoms of Mesothelioma that cannot be overlooked. These involve pain while breathing or coughing, gasping for breath and a persistent cough that may result in sputum streaked with blood. Besides, exhaustion, weight loss and appetite loss are some of the other contributing symptoms. Other very rare symptoms are hoarse voice, swelling of the face or the neck, problem in swallowing and pain around the rib area.

However, depending upon the location of the cancerous tumors (pleura or peritoneum) the symptoms vary in case of pleural and peritoneal Mesothelioma. In pleural Mesothelioma, the fluid gets accumulated in the pleura and leads to shortness of breath, persistent coughing, pain in the chest, difficulty in sleeping, pain in the lower back and side of chest, husky voice, nausea, difficulty in swallowing and fever.

Cancer in the lining of the abdomen is what we know as peritoneal Mesothelioma. Because of the fluid retention in the abdominal cavity there is a subsequent abdominal pain and swelling.

Noticeable symptoms of peritoneal Mesothelioma are listed as follows:
- Weight loss
- Abdominal pain
- Build up of fluid in the abdomen
- Bowel obstruction
- Abnormal blood clotting
- Abdominal mass and fever

Mesothelioma's treatment depends upon several factors like location of the cancer, stage of the disease, patient's age and general health. Standard treatments that are carried out to cure the disease include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Sometimes, these treatments are combined to achieve better results.

Thus it is worthwhile to mention, as all doctors say that to fight a disease we need to find the symptoms first. So be aware of the symptoms of Mesothelioma and consult the doctor at the very onset for an immediate treatment.

Healing From Childhood Abuse

By Margaret Paul, Ph.D.

In the 37 years that I have been counseling individuals, I have worked with many people who have suffered from severe physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse in childhood. Many who have sought my help were suffering from fear and anxiety, depression, various addictions, relationship problems and sexual problems. Many of these people had no memory of their childhood and had no idea why there were so unhappy. Many had spent years in therapy yet had never remembered their abuse.

The reason they could not remember the traumatic events of their childhood is because the child or children within, who suffered the abuse, did not feel safe in revealing the abuse. These unconscious inner parts were protecting the person from reliving the horrible pain of the past. These inner children knew that the adult self did not have the strength to learn about and manage the information and the feelings.

In order to remember and heal traumatic events from the past that are affecting you today, you need to have a strong and loving Adult self who is capable of managing emotional pain. Without this loving inner Adult, you may get so flooded and overwhelmed with the feelings of traumatic memories that you cannot function.

The gentle, transformational Inner Bonding process that we teach is a process for developing this strong, loving Adult self. The loving Adult is the aspect of us that is connected with a powerful and loving Source of spiritual guidance - whatever this is for you. Learning and practicing the Inner Bonding process develops your ability to connect with your personal Source of spiritual guidance. It is your connection with your guidance that gives you the strength to manage the intensely painful feelings of childhood abuse.

Once the inner children who hold the memories feel safe that there is a loving Adult self who is capable of managing the feelings, you will start to remember your past. As these memories come up, you will begin to understand the conclusions you drew about yourself that are currently causing your pain. Almost all children who have been abused draw erroneous conclusions about themselves as a result of the abuse - false beliefs such as, "I'm not important." "I have no worth." "I am just an object for others' use." "I am not lovable." "I should never have been born." "I would be better off dead." "I don't deserve love." "I am a bad person." It is these beliefs that are causing your present pain.

Healing from childhood abuse is not just about remembering the past. It is about remembering the very good reasons you had for drawing the conclusions that are currently causing you such pain. It is about gently and lovingly acknowledging what happened that led to your present beliefs that are now limiting you. It is about learning how to access the truth from your spiritual source so that you can move out of lies that you are telling yourself that are causing your current pain.

Most of us learn to treat ourselves based on how we were treated and how our parents or caregivers treated themselves. When your parents abused you, they were also not taking loving care of themselves and were not role modeling loving self-care. As long as you treat yourself the way your parents or other caregivers treated you and themselves, you will suffer. Healing from childhood abuse is about developing your loving Adult self so that you can learn to treat your inner child or inner children the way you always wanted to be treated.

You CAN fully heal from childhood abuse, but only through learning to access and bring into your being the love, truth, wisdom and strength of your spiritual guidance. Through learning and practicing the Inner Bonding process, you will discover the incredibly beautiful and perfect essence within you - the part of you that was never damaged by the abuse. This is your true Self that will emerge as you heal the false beliefs of your wounded self. This is what will happen as you develop your loving Adult self through learning and practicing the Inner Bonding process.

Margaret Paul, Ph.D. best-selling author of eight books, and co-creator of the powerful Inner Bonding healing process. Visit her web site for a FREE Inner Bonding course: http://www.innerbonding.com or email her at mailto:margaret@innerbonding.com.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

By Johnny Bravo

Mesothelioma is an extremely nasty and permanent cancer that infects the membrane surrounding most internal organs. It is also a very subtle form of cancer providing only a few noticeable symptoms until it becomes extremely advanced. The most common type of mesothelioma is called pleural mesothelioma. It causes shortness of breath and/or chronic coughing that can easily be mixed up with allergies or a common cold. In many cases mesothelioma is discovered by accident when patients are looking into these symptoms.

Other symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:
-Chest Pain
-Chronic coughing that worsens over time
-Shortness of breath
-Coughing up blood
-Fatigue
-Wheezing
-Lung infection
-Swollen lymph nodes
-Loss of appetite and weight loss
75%25 of all mesothelioma cases are Pleural mesothelioma. Another type is called Peritoneal mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining around the stomach and intestines and can be just as dangerous and deadly. Symptoms of Peritoneal mesothelioma include:
-Pain or swelling in the abdomen
-Weight loss
-Bowel obstruction blockage in the small / large intestine
-Anemia reduction in number of red blood cells
-Fever

High risk groups such as asbestos and construction workers must undergo frequent check-ups to monitor any conditions leading to mesothelioma. Because this cancer is so deadly, early diagnosis and treatment can help prolong life, but the mortality rate is usually 100%25 within five years.

Types of Mesothelioma

By Ian Koch

Mesothelioma is a cancer that primarily affects the cells around the lungs and ribs. The only known cause of this type of cancer is exposure to asbestos. There exist different types of mesothelioma that can be found in the human body. Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. The most common are
pleural mesothelioma
peritoneal mesothelioma

Mesothelioma treatment will be based upon which type the subject has.
Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer of the cells that make up the pleura or lining around the outside of the lungs and inside of the ribs. Its only known cause in the U.S. is previous exposure to asbestos fibers, including chrysotile, amosite or crocidolite. This exposure is likely to have happened twenty or more years before the disease becomes evident, since it takes many years for the disease to "incubate." It is the most common type of mesothelioma, accounting for about 75%25 of all cases. Shortness of breath and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleura are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a tumor of this membrane. Its only known cause in the U.S. is previous exposure to asbestos, but it can be many years after exposure before the disease appears. Peritoneal mesotheliomas account for about one-fifth of all mesotheliomas. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and abdominal pain and swelling due to a buildup of fluid in the abdomen. Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever.

While the great majority of mesotheliomas are in either the pleura or the peritoneum, malignant mesotheliomas sometimes occur in other parts of the body, including the testicles (a variety of peritoneal mesothelioma) and the heart (a variety of pleural mesothelioma.) These are also caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.

Treatment of mesothelioma using conventional cancer therapies has unfortunately not proved successful and patients have a short median survival time of 6 - 12 months after presentation. Surgery, either by itself or used in combination with pre- and post-operative adjuvant therapies has also proved disappointing with a 5 year survival rate of less than 10%25. Treatment regimens involving immunotherapy have yielded variable results but most of them have been disappointing, which has initiated great interest in the development of alternative forms of therapy, especially those capable of specifically destroying diseased cells without affecting surrounding healthy tissue.

What Causes Childhood Arthritis?

By David Chandler

What is childhood arthritis?

Childhood arthritis is a disease that occurs in children under the age of 16. It causes pain, stiffness, and swelling in one or more of the joints. This pain, stiffness, and swelling are called inflammation. With childhood arthritis, the inflammation lasts longer than six weeks, and is not caused by an injury or other illness. Childhood arthritis is also called juvenile arthritis.

How common is childhood arthritis? It affects 1 in 1,000 US children under the age of 16.
Both boys and girls are affected by childhood arthritis. Arthritis is not just a disease of old people. In fact, approximately one in 1,000 children under the age of 16 suffers from arthritis. Juvenile arthritis is among the most common chronic childhood disorders.

What causes childhood arthritis?
The exact cause of childhood arthritis is unknown. Childhood arthritis does not usually run in families and cannot be passed from one person to another. The onset of childhood arthritis may follow an infection or injury, but these events do not cause the arthritis.
With childhood arthritis, the body's immune system stops working properly. The immune system's job is to fight off germs and disease. However, in a child with childhood arthritis the immune system attacks healthy tissues. What triggers this process is unknown.

What can you do about childhood arthritis? If your child has inflammation, in one or more joints for more than six weeks your doctor may perform a physical examination of your child and order tests, such as x-rays and blood tests to find out what is causing the inflammation. There is not just one single symptom, sign, or test that will give a diagnosis of childhood arthritis.

If your doctor thinks your child has childhood arthritis, he or she will usually refer your child to a rheumatologist (pronounced room-a-tol-o-jist). A rheumatologist is a doctor who has received special training in the diagnosis and treatment of problems involving inflammation of the joints, muscles and other parts of the body.

Mesothelioma Information - Knowing About The Disease Is Our Own Right

By Fred Lindell

Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer induced by exposure to asbestos. It affects the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers most of the internal organs of the human body and nearly takes 10-50 years to develop. In the nascent stage of Mesothelioma attack, the pleura or peritoneum are affected and then it gradually spreads to the other parts of the body. Mesothelioma is also termed as 'malignant' mesothelioma where the lining of the chest, the abdomen and the heart are attacked. There are two types of mesothelioma, one being Pleural mesothelioma (lung cancer) and the other being Peritoneal mesothelioma (abdominal cancer).

How you can get affected of Mesothelioma

The inhaling of the fine airborne asbestos dust and fibers causes mesothelioma. It is a proven fact, as 70%25 to 80%25 of the case histories of patients state that asbestos exposure in factories or industries leads to mesothelioma. Hence all those working in construction based jobs like shipyards, boilermakers, insulators etc. are susceptible to this fatal disease.

The first step to cure of this disease is to find out all the relevant symptoms. But because of the long latency period of mesothelioma, the symptoms come into play even after 30-50 years since the contraction of the disease. Moreover, the symptoms are not conclusive, and are common to most other diseases. This is why the mesothelioma tests are imperative from the doctor's point of view.

The symptoms

The three most prominent symptoms of Mesothelioma are excruciating pain whilst breathing or coughing, breathing problems and a persistent cough, which could even, lead to bleeding. In addition, tiredness, loss of appetite, loss of weight are some of the other symptoms. Amongst some of the very rare symptoms, husky voice, problem in swallowing, swelling of the face and pain around the rib area are considered.

The diagnosis

It is a daunting task to diagnose the victims of mesothelioma. Normally the average age of the victims at diagnosis is around 50 to 70 years. Surprisingly, the white Americans are victimized more than the African Americans. At the time diagnosis begins, the disease had already spread and seems invincible. A victim would normally survive for only one year when the disease becomes quite ominous. However, the survival time of the patient can be stretched to almost two years if the disease is detected early and given proper treatment.

The treatment

There are many factors, which determine the treatment of Mesothelioma viz., stage of the disease, location of the cancer, patient's age and general health. Surgeries, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are amongst the basic treatments for Mesothelioma. In the recent past, treatments like removal of the pleural fluid to relieve pain and control breathlessness are being used. Apart from medication, there are a few helpful techniques that can help relieve pain and stress. These involve a balanced diet preferably prescribed by a general physician or a dietitian, conservation of energy on self-initiative as well as therapies such as aromatherapy, relaxation and massage.

In the inference, it would be worthwhile to mention that Mesothelioma is a dreadful disease and its spread can only be shunned if you are willing to know more about the disease. Then again you should also make sure that you take precautionary measures by piecing together all the information that you have garnered today.

Fibrous Mesothelioma

By Satish Pandey

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma , an extremely rare form of cancer, derives its name from mesothelium, which is the tissue infected by this cancer. Mesothelium is a membrane covering most of the body viscera. Factually speaking, mesothelium consists of two layers: one of the two forms an immediate cover of the organ; the other one leaves a space around the first layer and then forms a covering. A fluid released by mesothelium fills this sac-like space. Function of this fluid is lubrication, in other words, it allows convenient and frictionless motion of the internal body organs.

Description:-

In the chest and abdominal cavities, as well as in the cavity around the hear there is a layer of specialized cells. These cells also surround the outer surface of most internal organs. The mesothelium performs a protective function for the internal organs by producing a lubricating fluid that permits the organs to move around. For example, this fluid makes it easier for the lungs to move inside the chest while a person breathes. The mesothelium of the abdomen is known as the peritoneum, and the mesothelium of the chest is called the pleura. The pericardium refers to the mesothelium of the pericardial cavity.

Two types of Mesothelioma:-

Malignant Mesothelioma:- cancerous form of tumour, which is virtually always caused by sustained exposure to asbestos. The time period between first exposure to asbestos and appearance of first symptoms can be anywhere between 20-50 years. In some cases, it may stretch even beyond that. Besides the treatment methods mentioned forth, supportive treatment such as pain-relief and oxygen may also help in relieving the symptoms a bit. Even though. Prognosis depends upon the stage of cancer, and availability of effective treatment options, different studies indicate median period to be between 4 and 18 months.

Benign-fibrous Mesothelioma: - Non cancerous tumour of the pleura. This is a localized type of tumour, which, as studies suggest, affects men more frequently then women. The usual symptoms to appear are chronic cough and shortness of breath. The reason for appearance of these symptoms is, the tumour grows to a large size at times and compresses the lung, causing shortness of breath. During physical examination, the health care professional may observe a clubbed appearance of fingers. Pleural effusion is a complication of this disorder.

Causes and Symptoms

The primary risk factor for developing mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. In the past, asbestos was used as a very effective type of insulation. The use of this material, however, has been declining since the link between asbestos and Mesothelioma has become known. It is thought that when the fibers of asbestos are inhaled, some of them reach the ends of the small airways and penetrate into the pleural lining.

There the fibers may directly harm mesothelial cells and eventually cause Mesothelioma. If the fibers are swallowed, they can reach the abdominal cavity, where they can contribute to the formation of peritoneal Mesotheliomamesothelioma.

The early symptoms of mesothelioma are often ignored, because they may be caused by a variety of ailments. These symptoms include:

* pain in the lower back or at the side of the chest
* shortness of breath
* difficulty swallowing
* cough
* fever
* fatigue
* abdominal pain

Diagnosis

A doctor should be seen if a person experiences shortness of breath, chest pain, or pain or swelling in the abdomen. If these symptoms are present, the doctor may order an x ray of the abdomen or chest. The doctor will do a complete physical examination and take a thorough medical history.

Prevention

The best method of preventing mesothelioma is to avoid or limit exposure to asbestos. People who might experience asbestos exposure at work include miners, insulation manufacturers, construction workers, ship builders, and factory workers.

Making Your Child A Part Of The Homeschooling Process

By Brandon C. Hall

When you undergo homeschooling, it is important that you have a clear curriculum and mind and a plan to execute it. But within that plan, you should understand that you have a tremendous amount of flexibility: there are many different ways that a child can learn something, and many different things to learn in a given subject.

One of the best ways that you can ensure a high level of learning retention is to encourage your child to take a personal interest in his or her education. Although this may seem obvious, many people growing up who went though a traditional school system will probably agree that their education was received in an authoritative way: schooling and your education was something that was done to you, not with you.

When homeschooling, however, you can take advantage of the almost unlimited flexibility at your disposal and let your child take a more active role. While you cant, obviously, let your child do whatever he or she wants education-wise, you should always explain to him or her a given education plan, and see what he thinks.

For example, when you start your school day, outline the plan for the day with your child. Depending on his or her age you can also explain the reasoning behind the plan. If there are any things the child seems averse to doing, try and take them seriously. You should not, of course, avoid certain subjects or activities simply because your child doesnt like them. You should, however, ask your child why he or she doesnt like something in the days plan, and to suggest alternatives. In many cases you will be pleasantly surprised by what your child comes up with, and be able to incorporate it into the days work.

As much as possible, you should have a list of alternatives in mind for assigned activities. The idea is to try and think of alternative activities that accomplish the same task. If your child protests against a certain exercise, then, you can offer them an alternative. This can be extremely effective in getting your children to learn material that they dislike.

Oftentimes the child simply has to feel that he or she is more in control of the situation to enjoy it. Even though you are ultimately controlling your childs education, by granting them small allowances and choices, while still sticking with the larger picture, everybody wins: your child feels he is doing what he wants to do, and you are still teaching your child what you want him to learn.

Asbestos Symptoms: Late Indicators

By Kirsten Hawkins

Asbestos symptoms refer to the changes in the body that indicate some type of serious diseases caused by exposure to asbestos particles.

Awareness about asbestos symptoms is important because danger of asbestos exposure affects about 1.3 million people every year. Individuals employed in the railroad, factory, shipyard, automobile, construction and building industries in last six decades are at the risk of developing asbestos symptoms.

Most unfortunate aspect of the asbestos related diseases is that the asbestos symptoms may lie dormant in the body for decades. This long latency period does not let the victim or his family knows about the existence of the disease. Asbestos symptoms might appear after 20-50 years of exposure.

No study so far has come out with convincing evidence to show the effects of different amount and different duration of exposure to asbestos particles. Although individuals who have been exposed to asbestos for a longer time are more susceptible to asbestos related diseases, yet there are instances when patients developed serious disease with only a few months exposure.

When exposed to asbestos, individuals either inhale or ingest the asbestos fibers. Natural destination of these fibers after inhalation is lungs while the ingested asbestos fibers take the route of digestive system. Therefore, asbestos symptoms start appearing in either lungs or digestive system. However, in some cases asbestos symptoms may appear in other organs also.

Asbestos symptoms may be the indicators of cancerous and non- cancerous type of asbestos diseases. Asbestosis is a non-cancerous type of asbestos disease. This disease has asbestos symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain and persistent cough. Ignorance of these symptoms may lead to serious disability or even death.

Mesothelioma is cancerous type of asbestos disease. Pleural mesothelioma affects the lining of lungs known as pleural membrane. Peritoneal mesothelioma shows its affect on the lining of organs of abdomen known as peritoneal membrane. Shortness of breath, persistent cough, chest pain and building up of fluids in the lungs are some symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Asbestos symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are weight loss, nausea, difficulty in bowel movements, foot swelling, anemia and building up of fluid in abdomen. In rare cases, fever and night sweating may also appear as asbestos symptoms.

People suffering from asbestos symptoms can file lawsuits against the persons and organizations for causing asbestos exposure. These Asbestos lawsuits can help the victims of asbestos symptoms to recover the damages for medical expenses, loss of income, lost earning capacity, pain and psychological sufferings.

400,000 New Yorkers Inhale One of The Most Lethal Pollutants -Asbestos

By J FARRINGTON

What they did not tell you about 9/11!

A Latest study by the U.S. government provides the recent evidence of a systematic cover-up of the health toll from pollution following the 9/11 catastrophe, which doctors dread will cause more deaths than the attacks themselves.

Belfast Telegraph says, The Bush administration witheld evidence of increasing danger and officially announced that the air surrounding the felled buildings was "safe to breathe".

But results of the government study, conducted by a consortium of researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Columbia University, New York University, Johns Hopkins University, The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, show exposure-related increases in new-onset cough, wheeze, shortness of breath, and bronchial hyperreactivity more than two years after the disaster.

Ambient air samples showed that asbestos levels in the WTC area were significantly elevated consequent to the September 11 attacks, but fell to within federal standards after the first few days.

"More research is required to decide whether long-term exposure to asbestos fibers may lead to an increased risk of lung mesothelioma, a rare cancer that has been linked to asbestos exposure," said Landrigan. "Previous studies have shown the tiny chrysotile fibers found in the WTC dust to be the predominant fiber in lung mesothelioma tissue."
It is vital to note that symptoms of mesothelioma may not surface until 30-50 years after exposure to asbestos.

Commonly symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are:
shortness of breath,
pain in the chest

Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms include:

weight loss,
abdominal pain,
swelling,
bowel obstruction,
blood clotting,
anemia,
fever.

If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.

It is extremely important to see a doctor concerning any of these symptoms. Only a doctor can make a diagnosis.
