Hiring a Full-Time Nanny for Your Baby

By Jenny Parker

The Screening process:

Make a list of what you and your spouse desire in a full-time nanny: What are your required hours, do you prefer a live-in or commuting nanny, how much experience do you require, do you require a nanny to have experience with children of any particular age (if you have a 3 month old, someone who has mostly worked with toddlers might not be ideal), what other duties are expected around the house (cooking, laundry, cleaning, etc.–child care should always be the primary duty), if you require them to speak a certain second language with your child, etc.

Then make a list of your most basic questions based on your requirements: Have this list by the phone, so you can ask every phone screen candidate this list of questions. Make several copies of this list and record every candidates answer with their name and phone numbers next to it. Later on, you may need to refer to these lists of questions and answers during the interview process or even when deciding between candidates.

Ask your candidates some basic questions too: Whats their ideal family to work for? Why are they currently looking? Do they have any unique requests for you?

If your screening process is successful, then you should only bring qualified candidates for the interview process.

The Interview process:
Meeting the candidates in person is the most important step of the hiring process, this is where you get to learn the most about your potential child care provider and observe her with your child. Yes, be sure to have your child there with you. If your child is an infant, see how comfortable she is holding your child and if your child is comfortable with her. If your child is a toddler, this meeting provides a great opportunity to see how she talks and interacts with a young child (yours). Take cues from your child!

During the interview process, again be prepared! Make a list of questions you and your spouse want to ask so you dont end the interview and later discover that you missed some information. It is very important that you put some thought into the questions and be sure to structure all your questions in a way that they can not be simply answered with a 'Yes' or 'No.' These are often really more 'topics for discussion' than actual 'questions.' Great topics can ensure that you can make the most informed hiring decision. Also, always ask for specific examples from their previous experience. Be friendly and courteous during the interview process so that the candidates are at ease and comfortable telling you about themselves. Below are some examples of topics to discuss:

Tell us about your experience working with children.

Tell us about your work/life before becoming a nanny.

Why did you decide to become a nanny? (If their answer is not because they love babies or young children, then ask what they enjoy the most about being a nanny)

What kind of family is the most ideal or suitable for you to work with? (This is almost an intelligence test…)

Tell us about your work with past families.

What was a typical day like when you were taking care of the child from family A?

What was typical week like?

What are some of your favorite activities that you liked to do with the toddler you took care of?

How do you handle a child who is having a temper tantrum?

Give us an example of when a child you took care of was hurt. How did you handle it?

Give us an example of a time when you and the childs parent had a disagreement about how to care for the child, and how did you and the parents handle it? (This question might tell if a nanny will listen to you or prefers to have her way).

What questions do you have for us?

The above are just some sample questions, you should construct questions of your own based on the issues that matter to you most. Also, if an answer peaked your interest or raised a question, always follow up with 'tell me more about that?' or 'why is that?' to learn more about your candidate.

Reference check:
Now that you have made your decision, a thorough reference check is in order to validate your selection. This is also your opportunity to uncover any red flags or surprises. After all, you are about to hand over the care of your baby to this person. Again, a well prepared list of questions can help you with getting the most out of the conversation with your potential nannys previous employers:

When did she start to work for your family? How old was your child at the time?

When did she leave? Why did she leave?

When your child was an infant, what was a typical day like for your baby?

When you child was a toddler, what was a typical day like for him?

What other duties does she have around the house besides child care?

What do you like the most about her?

Please share with me an area where you thought she could do better, how you brought it up to her, and how she handled it.

Can you share with me a time where you or your spouse had a disagreement with her about child care (maybe about eating, napping schedules, etc), and how the situation was handled?

If there was a time when your child was hurt, how did she handle it? (The best answer is that the child was never hurt under her care!)

How often is she late? and absent?

What advice do you have for me to ensure a successful partnership with her for my baby?

The Decision process:
Trust your gut. If something does not feel quite right, it is a 'no.' Both parents and the child (if old enough) have full 'veto' power. When considering between two similar candidates who are both equally qualified, the old standby of a 'pros' and 'cons' list is a good tool. Keep in mind that not all things on the list may be of equal importance.

If you hired her but it does not work out:
If you feel like you need to let her go, let her go right away! You cant afford to give the courtesy of a 2-week notice with someone you can not trust. Even if this means that you have to pay for the two weeks without getting the service. After all, we are talking about your precious but quite helpless baby.

If the hire is successful:
Count your blessings! Treat your nanny with respect and treat her like family! When you treat her like family, she will likely treat your child like family…like her own child or grandchild.

Finding The Right Child Care for Your Baby

By Sarah Veda

The first option is in-home child care, meaning a sitter, or nanny who comes to your home to watch the child. This is by far the most expensive option, but it has many advantages. Your child will be at home, and will have the full attention of the nanny. In addition, your child will be exposed to fewer illnesses, and you will not have to transport her back and forth on your way to and from work. The main disadvantage is that you have no real backup if your nanny gets sick or wants to take vacation. Another thing to consider is your feelings if your child develops a very strong bond with the nanny. More than one mother has been hurt by the sense that the baby is more comfortable with the nanny than with her.

The second option is a small home daycare, meaning you find someone who will keep your child in her home, perhaps with her own children or one or two others. This is a good option if you want your child in a home atmosphere, but cant afford the full time nanny. This option shares the same disadvantages of having a nanny in terms of no backup plan.

The third option is a traditional daycare center. Traditional daycares are affordable, and there is no need to worry about a caretaker getting sick or wanting to take vacation. A daycare might also be more of a learning environment than home care, which will become more important to you as your child gets older. The main disadvantages of daycares are that your child is exposed to all the germs of all the children. Be prepared for the both of you to be sick for a year. The other disadvantage is the numbers of children being cared for. For example, in most states, the law requires one caretaker per eight babies. Now, I dont know about you, but I could not effectively care for eight babies alone. So, if you decide to use a daycare center, be sure to ask their caretaker to child ratio. Look for one with about five babies per caretaker.

Choosing your babys childcare arrangement is one of the most important decisions youll make. Even after youve chosen a care option, be diligent about ensuring that your child is receiving the best care. Drop in unannounced at odd times of day to see whats going on. Dont be afraid to ask questions, and let the caretaker know whats important to you. Its critical not only to your childs well being, but to your own piece of mind.

Your Childs Anger May Not be What You Think It Is

By MaryLynne White

When a child responds angrily to a parents message, that message has not gone to the thinking part of the childs brain. No, it has not reached the front part of the brain that does logical, rational thinking and problem solving. It has actually traveled to the part of the brain dealing with emotions. Most people know this as the limbic system, which is located in the central part of the brain. I call this the lizard part of the brain because it has no thinking abilities whatsoever; it merely reacts.

Have you ever noticed how angry, upset children (and some adults) appear as irrational? Theyre in the lizard part of their brain and cant think straight. Theyre not trying to control and manipulate you. Whats happening is something lying underneath the surface of their conscious mind. Underneath the anger is a feeling of fear. Its totally unconscious so usually both parents and children are unaware of it. When a child becomes angry and moves toward a temper tantrum stage of feelings, what the child is non-verbally telling you is: • 'I cant think–Im in the lizard part of my brain and I dont know how to get out of it to the thinking part where I can talk you in a way that makes sense.' • 'I need your help–I dont know what to do; Ive become so upset, Ive regressed to about the age of 2 or 3.' Would you expect a 2 year old to be able to sit down and have a rational, logical conversation with you? I dont think so! And yet, that is the very thing many parents attempt to do when their child is angry and upset. Can you see the waste of energy that gets expended doing this?

What you as a parent can do to help your angry child is to remain calm. Think like a super nanny on the front lines of parenting. The first thing you have to do is to help your child move to the thinking part of his or her brain. To do this, calmly (and with no sarcasm) 1. Ask your child, 'What part of your brain do you think youre using right now, the lizard part or the thinking part?' if the answer is, 'lizard part', then ask, 2. Is that working for you? Are you getting what you want?' If your child tells you 'no', then go the next question, 3. 'What do you need to do to get back to the thinking part of your brain?' If the child says, 'I dont know,' let him or her know you can see the shift has already happened because your child is answering your questions. This is a good thing! 4. If your child has calmed down a bit, ask if he or she needs some time to think about what just happened so you can talk about it together and come up with a way to handle the situation differently next time. If the child responds with a 'no', give a hug and say something like, 'You are always so much nicer when youre using the thinking part of your brain.' Then, walk away.

The next time, youre faced with an angry child ask yourself two important questions before you respond: 1. What part of the brain is my child using right now? 2. At what age do I usually see these behaviors in a child If your child is in the lizard part of the brain and acting like a toddler, this would not be a good time to talk. Get your child so he or she can think rationally, calm down and then go for the talk. You cant talk to a toddler (or anyone else for that matter) when hes upset. Help him calm down simply by acknowledging his angry feelings and be there with a smile and a hug (regardless of how youre feeling). This is a small gesture and will pay big benefits for you down the road.

Time-Out Sucks…Away Your Childs Emotional Security

By B. Bryan Post, PhD, LCSW

Bishop T.D. Jakes says, 'If you always do what youve always done, you will always be where youve already been!' If the dunce chair or standing with your nose in the corner didnt work when we were children, then why do we think by dressing it up as something seemingly more contemporary, that it is going to work now? Many of you may be saying, 'But it does work. All I have to do is start counting to three and my child stops their behavior to avoid time out,' or maybe youre saying, 'If its good enough for Super Nanny, its good enough for me.' Have you seen the new King Kong flick? Well, to a two-year old, an adult looks something like Kong did to the blonde, an utter giant. Wouldnt you sit in a chair for two or three minutes if King Kong told you to do so? Wouldnt you stop your behavior if you knew that if you continued, you would lose the loving support of your most secure attachment figure? Help me understand how it makes sense to send a child whose behavior is clearly communicating that they are unable to manage their current emotional state, to go sit by themselves to sort through their upset emotions, alone. 'Time-out' does not recognize the developmental and regulatory struggles a child is demonstrating in the midst of their behavior of acting out. Consider for a moment that rather than a child acting out for attention, he is in fact, acting out because he needs attention. Read that sentence again. It can make all of the difference. Instead of sending the child off to sit in a chair or be isolated, bring the child into you for a period of time. Have him sit next to you, hold your hand, stand beside you. Say to the child, 'When you are feeling better you may go back and play.' In other words, allow the child to determine how much time-in that he needs. Important point: It is not imperative that you touch the child during this time. A child that does not want to be touched, or reacts violently, should not be touched. In that moment, the child is in survival mode and feels very threatened. Keep your distance, but indicate to the child that you are nearby and will stay so, until the child feels safer.

'Time-in' can be a very effective alternative to 'time-out'. 'Time-in' teaches compassion, regulation, the ability to create internal calm in the midst of stress, and understanding. Before providing 'Time-In' for your child, give some to yourself. Take a moment, find a quiet corner, take four deep breaths, and find your calm, peaceful self. Now you are ready to help calm your child.

Do You Want More Brain Power for Your Child?

By Anandrahi

And to improve the brain power of a person we have to influence the non-stop neural conversations with positive pushes. But dont think only a psychologist can understand the intricacies of your brain and has the art of influencing it to increase its power. By taking a few steps any parent can achieve the goal of developing a super brain in his or her child.

You will definitely agree that in modern world most of the parents devote a lot of time and energy in finding ways or schools to help the children develop a super brain. Good schools give special emphasis on the brain power of the children. Most of the parents are worried that their child is not performing well at school. They do whatever is there in their capacity so that they may be proud of their children.

Here are a few simple steps which will certainly help parents to start the action at home - the best place to develop a wonder child with a super brain.

See the Limits of Your Child

Every child has some limits so you just cant enforce your desires. Pushing any child hard actually may damage its psychology as well as unique talent. So go easy and understand the nature and the limitations of your child.

Find out the Good Points

Every child is made unique in some way. So observe that unique quality. Sometimes a unique quality of a child just lies dormant in his mind till there is a provocation to rouse it. Understand it and develop it with love and care. It is the best way to boost confidence. Let your child involve more in those activities in which he can show more ability. Whenever a child is able to do a thing well there is a surge of confidence. And confident brains are always more sharp. You may take the help of a wise teacher or psychologist to understand the unique quality of your child in its true manner.

Create a Friendly Atmosphere at Home

Parents must create a friendly atmosphere at home to provide a fine nurturing ground. It is necessary to remove the barriers from the psychology of a child. Fear causes obstruction and a child is unable to develop fully. Especially the unique quality of your child, that is still lying dormant, may take a few more years to surface.

Ask Questions and Answer the Questions without Irritation

It is true that all parents love their children; nevertheless, most of them get irritated at the questions of children. You need total patience and a rational attitude towards your child. Also create an atmosphere of asking questions at your home. A child must be often asked questions almost daily. And questions should be framed in such a way that a child is able to answer most of them (not all of them). Also encourage the child to ask questions. Such an atmosphere gives necessary boost to the brain of a child. Parents should always realise that showing curiosity about various things is a natural tendency of a child. If a child starts repressing his feelings or thoughts, it may hamper the healthy growth of brain power.

Help the Child Sleep with a Positive Mind

Moments of sleeping time are extremely important in the development of the personality of a child. Unfortunately most of the parents ignore it. Fill positive thoughts in the mind of a child and help him relax before sleeping. It will boost his confidence and brain energy marvellously.

By taking all these steps the parents can see the miracle happening in near future. And they will be happier by the performance of their child.

The Teething Child

By Terrie C.

First things first. A good lot of folks will always jump to the first thought and idea that comes to mind. Orajel. Yes- Orajel is pretty good, but if you choose to use it, make sure its baby orajel, and use it in moderation. Orajel does contain a pain reliever and a percentage of alcohol, and when over used, can have minor drug effects on the child.

I have always tried a number of other solutions before resorting to orajel or any other drugs. Entertainment in most cases can work wonders. Play some hands on activities with the child. For instance- play some stretching and touching games with fingers and toes. This usually works super great if you know some nursery rhymes, childrens songs, and or happen to have a cassette or CD of childrens songs.

Example 1: Sing the song 'This Old man' and go through the motions to the song with your child. The music is soothing and entertaining, plus its hands on activity which could also be rated as a learning game for the child.

Example 2: Floor type entertainment centers for the child. I purchased one that is short but stands on its own. The child can lie in front of it, or even under it. It played musical songs, with lights that blink on and off to the music, plus it had hanging features such as little animals, rings, colored objects, and so forth.

Another approach you can take before trying medication is this- If by chance you have a baby swing, thats great, but if not a simple seater will do. Place the swing or seater and child in front of the TV. (Not too close) Put on some entertaining childrens videos, be it animal, tropical fish, or something with a learning nature. Next, place a good-sized bib onto the child and for some added protection, maybe a cloth diaper or blanket. Saturate a clean washcloth with cold water, ringing it out only half way. Give the washcloth to the child to chew on for a while. Its cool in their mouth and soft to chew on. Another added idea is keeping a few non-toxic water teething rings in the freezer. These can also be placed within the washcloth, if its too cold for the child to handle.

Has Child Care Changed Over The Years?

By Douglas T Adams

Child Care Going Professional

Child care entails more than just simply raising, educating and disciplining a child. Today, the child care industry is booming. It has now become mainstream business and the emergence of a host of child care centers up and down the country is a testament to the increasing demand for professional child care services in the modern society. Peoples view on child care have shifted over the years as parents are now more open-minded to using new methods of raising children. This evolution is a far cry from when the mother, grandparents and nanny, if one could afford it, did most if not all of the looking after of the children.

Given more women are now entering the workforce than 50 years ago, the responsibilities of caring for a child no longer sit squarely on the parents shoulders. The modern society is a lot more sophisticated now and the way children are raised today is getting more complicated. Professional carers enter this field to pick up the slack. It can be a godsend for some parents who have to work long hours to pay the bills and simply couldnt find enough time to interact with their children, much less providing round the clock care for them. It provides parents with the peace of mind that their children are getting professional care from people who are specially trained to take care of young children while they are away at work.

Many nurseries have mushroomed in recent years to take care of infants as well. Although this service may not be everyones cup of tea as most mothers will find it difficult to entrust their new born or young toddlers to someone else, there is still a demand for them nonetheless. Local community centers that are registered can refer parents to qualified child care professionals. Alternatively, getting personal recommendations from other parents or a friend is a good way of finding a good child care center.

Sending a child to a child care center still proves to be controversial. Some parents are adamant that every child needs the personal love and warmth of their parents as opposed to some stranger at a child care center. Others argue placing children in the hands of professionally trained people will greatly enhance a childs social skills as they will be interacting with other children. They learn to be adaptive and will also learn to share and care about others compared to a solitary child whose only interaction is with the parents and family members.

Child Dangers and Online Safety in Between the Lines

By Toni Harris

Do you read between the lines? Alternatively, do hear what you want to hear? I said could you hear me. What are the words you are hearing? What are the words you are saying?

I am online, leave me alone, your are violating my privacy. Every time I am hangin with my friends, you are buttin in.

Do you see this? Is this happening to you? If so, take control!

As a parent let me give you a tip, which I am banking on the fact that you have a child with less complications: I can take you into a world beyond your mental thinking capacity, but for the normal, hey we can go there. If your child is spilling out these words, what is your child saying to you?

What is your child saying to you? Are you listening to what your child has to say? Is your child telling you something you need to hear?

What is your child doing on the Internet? Do you know that the Internet is ten times more dangerous than the real world?

The Internet is a place where everybody frequents and NO ONE IN PARTICULAR monitors the internet to make sure serial killers/rapists, cyber stalkers, bullies and so on frequent this highway.

Where is the parents, teachers, law etc when you need them? The law has proven faithful for never being there when you need them. Oh wait, we have influential people that the law went out their way for. What the heck? Where is the safety?

The safety is hanging on your door. Parents are advised to teach their children never to give our personal information to anyone over the Internet or not, especially to anyone that considered a stranger. Parents are advised to monitor their childrens activities while online.

No one will care for your childs safety as you will. Be practical in how you approach Internet exploit in your home. If the subject of children and online safety is new to you, take this information and set new ground rules. You and your child will be better for making the change.

Your children may have difficulty understanding the rules, however it is important that you never show leniency in the covers of online safety for children. It is important to provide your children with clearly defined rules, in which the child can understand.

The Information Super Highway has a few potholes and detours. Parents can progress the usability of the Internet significantly by installing special filters and ad blockers, but some of the best defense is practical. Talk to your children about your expectations and facilitate it so that the children will understand that the Internet is a great tool for their usage and gratification, but it can also be dangerous if utilized in the wrong way.

Teach your children that they should never respond to e-mails that enclose bullying contents or threatening remarks. These e-mails should always be shown to parents along with any other information that makes the child abrasive.

With this in mind, it pays to learn to read between the lines, since in between these lines are messages. If you notice, any unusual activities use common sense while approaching the situation. Question your children regularly in a positive manner so that you always know what your children are doing online or not.

Keep the chains of communication open at all times, monitor your childs activities regularly and you are on the road to protecting your children. Dont forget to read between the lines, since this is part of keeping the communication stable and open.

Child Safety

By Ralph Winn

Child Safety Tip #1: Arm Against Strangers

You cant be with your children all the time. If your children are old enough to play in the yard alone, or ride bikes around the neighborhood, you must protect them from dangerous strangers. When it comes to child safety, protecting your child from people who mean to do them harm is parents number one concern. Pepper sprays can effectively disarm a criminal and give your child time to run and scream for help.

Child Safety Tip #2: Arm Against Animals

Strangers arent the only ones who can do harm to your child. A loose dog or angry raccoon is an equal danger in many neighborhoods. Protect your kids by arming them with animal repellant when they leave the yard to play. Give them canine repellant and even bear repellent if you live in bear country.

Child Safety Tip #3: Make Some Noise

Many children are snatched right from their front yards. Sometimes screaming isnt enough. Personal safety alarms will draw attention to your childs situation immediately. If a stranger approaches and tries to attack your child, the child can set off their personal safety alarm, which will emit a high pitched siren to call for help. Often, the criminal will run away.

Child Safety Tip #4: Keep Them Safe From Fires

In the event of a fire, a smoke alarms shrill tone is often enough to rouse sleeping adults and alert them to the danger, allowing them time to escape. However, studies have shown that young children may actually sleep through such alarms. Doctors have found that children respond best to the sound of their parents voices. Hence the invention of the vocal smoke alarm. It allows you to record your own instructions that will play in the event of a fire: 'Maddie, wake up. Its Mommy. Theres a fire. Get out of the house like we practiced.' Make sure your child knows what actions to take in the event of a fire, like feeling doors for heat and crawling below the smoke. Have a designated meeting place for all family members to gather once they escape, so you can do a quick headcount and ensure everyone is out.

Child Safety Tip # 5: Watch Them When You Arent Around

Its hard to leave your children alone with a nanny or babysitter. Are you sure you can trust them? Would the children tell you if something was wrong? Get peace of mind from a hidden camera that can monitor your children for you, either while you are away or even just in another room. Whether you have a spy camera in every room or just one, the technology is an excellent addition to your child safety security system. If you have suspicions that something is happening in your home without your knowledge, a spy camera can be your eyes for you when you are not around.

But aside from using high-tech child safety devices, increase your childrens personal security by teaching them how to protect themselves.

* Never get into a strangers car. * Dont even talk to strangers. * If someone makes you uncomfortable, go tell a trusted adult or just shout 'No! Help!' as loud as you can and try to run away. * Stop, drop, and roll. * Dial 911 in an emergency.

All these basic rules will help protect your children. Technology can boost child safety, but common sense is also a must.

Michael Moore's Sicko Review - A Documentary of the "Sickening" Health Care System in America!

By Sam Smith

There couldn't be a better word to describe Michael Moore's latest film "Sicko". Traveling through the health care world in the United States brings on a new era of realization of how "Sickening" the health insurance industry of America really is.

Almost 50 Million Americans live without health insurance in America. As bad as that is, some insurance companies make it extremely difficult to get any insurance claims at all for the rest of the 250 million Americans that do have health insurance coverage.

Sicko, documents a case where a man had accidentally sawed off two of his fingers, the index finger and the middle finger. When the man was taken to the hospital, he was given a choice - sew back the index finger for $12,000 or sew back the middle finger for $60, 000 - his choice was to keep his index finger, and keep a place for his sacred wedding ring.

This is not an uncommon story in the American health insurance industry, as Sicko depicts that health insurance companies will do whatever it takes to deny a recipient benefit claims.

Another example from Sicko is of a child who was taken to the nearest hospital, after her high fever of 104 would not come down. When she and her mother got to the hospital, they were informed that their HMO, Kaiser Permanente, would not cover the little girls health treatment costs, and that she has to be taken to a hospital that is affiliated with their HMO Kaiser Permanente. After arguing and desperately pleading with the hospital to treat the child there, and not transfer her to a different hospital, by the time the little girl did arrive to the HMO's affiliated hospital, the little girl Mychelle, was pronounced "expired."

Michael Moore also takes note of other countries health care systems compared to the American system and profiles countries such as Canada, England, and France - all which provide a free health care system.

In Canada, they can give their thanks to Tommy Douglas, who implemented the universal health care system, known as the Universal Medicare Legislation created in 1961.

In England, they have the NHS - National Health Service, which provides the majority of healthcare in England, from general practitioners to hospitals, long-term healthcare, dentistry and ophthalmology . Founded in 1948 it has become an integral part of British society, culture and everyday life.

In France, they have a system which offers unlimited sick days, vacation time starting at 4 weeks, and to top it off, free nurse and nanny care for new mothers. France was also given the title of "best health system in the world" by the World Health Organization (WHO) in June 2000.

Why is it that countries like Canada, England and France are able to offer their citizens free health care, and be so generous and kind, and then on the other side, the American system being so cruel and cold-hearted?

Sicko, explores the tragic and failing health care system in the United States of America, and can be viewed nationwide hitting the box offices on June 29th, 2007.

Children's Franchises for Sale

By Dorian

In the super competitive job market both parents often have to work just to keep up and with so many many single parents the amount of child care service providers needed has increased dramatically in the last decade. For investors that enjoy being around children the need for child based franchises has created an opportunity like no other. Children franchises are often small like a daycare operated from a home or much larger fully staffed child learning franchising opportunity. If you end up being one of the lucky few that operate a small home day care franchise; you can stay at home and secure your own wealth and financial future. With a large child care franchise for sale you have the ability to make a much larger income, but there is also a lot more work and time involved.

Childcare franchises are usually the first type of business americans think of when someone talks about a business working with and for kids, but there are many options for entrepreneurs that is looking into buying a business designed for banters. Some people have worked in many different areas and industries and if you are an entrepreneur with a lot of experience working with kids you might want to know more about purchasing a children education franchise. Should you be a person that likes to play around a lot a kids entertainment franchise or kid gym franchise business is often the top franchise for your personality. Don't forget about the other areas too that include child clothing store franchises that are great choices for businessmen that are very high energy and enjoy being around many different people daily. Child day care franchises are the most popular, but that doesn't mean that the others are not successful too.

Parents want their children to excel in their education because they know from their own experience that success and growth today is largely dependent on their schooling. The need for kids to do well has made a demand for superior educational services. Any good entrepreneur will tell you that a neighborhood tutoring franchise can become profitable and successful, and that a bigger educational franchise for children has plenty of room for growth. If you take the time to look you will find that there are several tutoring business franchises and kid scholarship franchise opportunities available to help the business investor reap the rewards caused by this new demand.

More children are obese now than before. This phenomenon has frightened the parents of these kids, and rightfully so, precisely because it can cause multiple health problems and it makes life harder for these children socially. As the franchisee of a children's fitness franchise opportunity the investor has a chance to make a lot of money, but also to furnish the public with a needed service. The child health and fitness businesses are operated like average day care businesses except for the fact that a lot of the time is used for projects and exercise that encourage a healthy lifestyle. By teaching youngsters to live healthy early on they might have a healthier time for the rest of their lives.

Child clothing franchise stores are something that any investor that has made a living in sales and wants to own a retail franchise, but also wants to be around children. A baby clothing or toy business franchise is run the same as any retail franchise except that the the output are introduced in a way that appeal to kids.

It is hard for families in todays world to raise kids healthy and happy. Fast paced lives and long commutes have made it more and more difficult with each passing day. As times have changed so have the needs of families. That is where the smart investor comes in and makes money. If owning a children's franchise seems like a franchise you would be interested in operating then make sure to do your research. There are a lot of franchise websites online listing daycare and education franchising opportunities to purchase. Locate some that spark your interest then research each one carefully. Operating a franchise where you help others is very rewarding. By owning a child franchise opportunity you are not only making your own destiny better, but likewise the lives of kids.

MESOTHELIOMA: Description, Diagnosis and Treatment

By Uzo Onukwugha

MD "The number one cause of cancer is ignorance. Knowledge of nutrition can help you remove or reduce the risk factors and abort the manifestation of any growth." –Uzo Onukwugha, MD

Mesothelioma is a tumor of the flat cells that cover the surface of the lungs, adjacent wind pipes and the thoracic cavity. Mesothelioma is an acronym of mesothelium (flat or cellophane covering) and 'oma' (Latin name for growth or tumor). It is a rare type of lung tumor associated with occupational hazard to asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma is an affliction that involves a multi-disciplinary approach and institutions: the physicians, occupational and preventive medicine, surgeons, occupational safety, worker's compensation, attorneys, occupational therapists and labor unions.

Risk Factors and Evolution of Tumor:

Long term inhalation of asbestos fibers is associated with certain occupations like ship-building, insulation, construction and demolition. The greatest worst culprits are blue and white asbestos. Cigarette smoking may double the risk. The disease is subtle and may take several years if not decades to produce symptoms. At onset, the diseases may not produce symptoms. A construction worker may only notice symptoms long after retirement. Appearance of symptoms may prompt the victim to seek medical help. The symptoms and signs may include shortness of breath, chest pain, fibrosis, pleural effusion, calcified plaques and bronchial cancer. The cancer may eat up the lungs, wind-pipes, ribs and adjacent muscles.

Types of Mesotheliomas: The growth may be fibrosed and localized or it may be diffused and malignant spreading to adjacent tissues.
Fibrous Mesotheloma:
May presents as chest discomfort, and all sorts of breathing problems. As with pleural-affected tumors, joint pain may be noticed in the hands, wrists, ankles and knees. Examination of the hands may reveal finger clubbing.

Chest x-ray is important in the clinical diagnosis and may reveal localized growth as soft-tissue mass. There may be air-fluid level showing effusion into the lung cavity.

The prognosis with surgical resection for this type is good even with evidence of spread. However, some may progress to full-blown malignancy.

Malignant Mesothelioma:

The symptoms of malignant mesothelioma appear much later and seem to peak at 55. The symptoms are diffuse and tend to develop in a couple of decades after exposure to asbestos. Cigarette smoke (carcinogen) tend to worsen the onset of the symptoms like breathlessness, and chest pain.

Chest x-ray may reveal connective tissue complications like clumping of the pleural tissues (pleurisy), pleural effusion, lung collapse, basal fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension and lupus erythematosis. Other autoimmune diseases and bronchial cancer may develop.
Sputum test is non-contributory and open pleural biopsy may be necessary to characterize the type of tumor before treatment.
At this stage, surgery is hopeless. Palliative radiotherapy or anticancer chemotherapy may be attempted but the prognosis is hopeless.

Prevention–better than cure:

The best treatment of mesothelioma is preventive measures and health advice to the at-risk professions. These include wearing face masks and finding alternatives to asbestos and quitting smoking. Change of jobs may be necessary.

Complimentary Treatment:

Green super foods like spirulina, chlorella, barley grass, wheat grass, green kamut, and alfalfa helps the body to stand the stress of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Greens are known to boost immunity attack, free radicals and neutralize toxins released by cancer cells. Supplements like multivitamins, minerals, aloe vera, and essential fatty acids can be added to the greens.

Helping Children and Youth With Bipolar Disorder

By Arthur Buchanan

Helping Children and Youth With Bipolar Disorder: Systems of Care
This fact sheet provides basic information on bipolar disorder in children and describes an approach to getting services and supports, called "systems of care," that helps children, youth, and families thrive at home, in school, in the community, and throughout life.

What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes persistent, overwhelming, and uncontrollable changes in moods, activities, thoughts, and behaviors. A child has a much greater chance of having bipolar disorder if there is a family history of the disorder or depression. This means that parents cannot choose whether or not their children will have bipolar disorder.

Although bipolar disorder affects at least 750,000 children in the United States 1 , it is often difficult to recognize and diagnose in children. If left untreated, the disorder puts a child at risk for school failure, drug abuse, and suicide. That is why it is important that you seek the advice of a qualified professional when trying to find out if your child has bipolar disorder.

Symptoms of bipolar disorder can be mistaken for other medical/mental health conditions, and children with bipolar disorder can have other mental health needs at the same time. Other disorders that can occur at the same time as bipolar disorder include, but are not limited to, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, anxiety disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, and drug abuse disorders.

The roles that a family's culture and language play in how causes and symptoms are perceived and then described to a mental health care provider are important, too. Misperceptions and misunderstandings can lead to delayed diagnoses, misdiagnoses, or no diagnoses–which are serious problems when a child needs help. That is why it is important that supports be in place to bridge differences in language and culture. Once bipolar disorder is properly diagnosed, treatment can begin to help children and adolescents with bipolar disorder live productive and fulfilling lives.

What Are the Signs of Bipolar Disorder?

Unlike some health problems where different people experience the same symptoms, children experience bipolar disorder differently. Often, children with the illness experience mood swings that alternate, or cycle, between periods of "highs" and "lows," called "mania" and "depression," with varying moods in between. These cycles can happen much more rapidly than in adults, sometimes occurring many times within a day. Mental health experts differ in their interpretation of what symptoms children experience. The following are commonly reported signs of bipolar disorder:

* Excessively elevated moods alternating with periods of depressed or irritable moods;
* Periods of high, goal-directed activity, and/or physical agitation;
* Racing thoughts and speaking very fast;
* Unusual/erratic sleep patterns and/or a decreased need for sleep;
* Difficulty settling as babies;
* Severe temper tantrums, sometimes called "rages";
* Excessive involvement in pleasurable activities, daredevil behavior, and/or grandiose, "super-confident" thinking and behaviors;
* Impulsivity and/or distractibility;
* Inappropriate sexual activity, even at very young ages;
* Hallucinations and/or delusions;
* Suicidal thoughts and/or talks of killing self; and
* Inflexible, oppositional/defiant, and extremely irritable behavior.

What Happens After a Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis?

If a qualified mental health provider has diagnosed your child with bipolar disorder, the provider may suggest several different treatment options, including strategies for managing behaviors, medications, and/or talk therapy. Your child's mental health care provider may also suggest enrolling in a system of care, if one is available.

What Is a System of Care?

A system of care is a coordinated network of community-based services and supports that are organized to meet the challenges of children and youth with serious mental health needs and their families. Families, children, and youth work in partnership with public and private organizations so services and supports are effective, build on the strengths of individuals, and address each person's cultural and linguistic needs. Specifically, a system of care can help by:

* Tailoring services to the unique needs of your child and family;
* Making services and supports available in your language and connecting you with professionals who respect your values and beliefs;
* Encouraging you and your child to play as much of a role in the design of a treatment plan as you want; and
* Providing services from within your community, whenever possible.

How Can I Find a System of Care for My Child With Bipolar Disorder?
Contact the system of care community in the box on the back of this fact sheet. If none is listed or that system of care community is not in your area, visit mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/cmhs and click "Child, Adolescent & Family" and then "Systems of Care" to locate a system of care close to you. If you prefer to speak to someone in person to locate a system of care, or if there is not a system of care in your area, contact the National Mental Health Information Center by calling toll-free 1.800.789.2647 or visiting mentalhealth.samhsa.gov.

* Tailoring services to the unique needs of your child and family;
* Making services and supports available in your language and connecting you with professionals who respect your values and beliefs;

If none is listed or that system of care community is not in your area, visit mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/cmhs and click "Child, Adolescent %26 Family" and then "Systems of Care" to locate a system of care close to you. If you prefer to speak to someone in person to locate a system of care, or if there is not a system of care in your area, contact the National Mental Health Information Center by calling toll-free 1.800.789.2647 or visiting mentalhealth.samhsa.gov.
