10 Ways To Make Sure Your Childs Toys Are Safe

By Aurel Radulescu

Follow the age recommendations on the package. This information is typically written in smaller print and is often located in a lower corner, or back, of the box.

If the toy contains small parts, consider your childs behavior before purchasing. Even if he/she is in the age range recommended by the manufacturer, parents must consider whether or not their child behaves mature enough to handle the toy and its parts.

Never leave a child unattended when playing with a toy that features small parts. Even if you step away for a minute, that may be all that it would take for your child to decide to put the toy in his/her mouth. This can be very dangerous, so always provide as much supervision as possible while your child is playing with his/her toys and even more so if they feature any small parts. At the same time, never allow children to run with any toys that have sharp or protruding points.

Never allow the child to put toys in his/her mouth. If the child were to swallow any part of the toy, or accessories, the result could be tragic. If you see the child putting his/her toys in their mouth, remove them immediately while saying 'no' in a firm voice. It is not necessary to take the toys away from the child, but they should be closely supervised.

Pay close attention to consumer safety department notices and product recalls. This information is very important because it provides updated information as to the safety of certain products, along with any that have been recently found to have defects. In the latter case, a product recall may be issued in order to avoid injuries. Never allow a child to play with toys that have been recalled or are not deemed to be safe.

Make sure that any drawing markers, paint or crayons that you purchase are non-toxic. On every product that has been tested and is proven to be non-toxic, the label will indicate any such findings. Look closely on the back of the packaging in search of this seal before buying these types of art accessories.

If a toy is painted, make sure that the paint is not coming off. This could be dangerous if the child were to put the toys in his/her mouth or if it were to get in their eyes, so be very mindful of chipping or peeling paint.

Make sure toys and dolls are flame retardant. This is very important for the obvious reasons and to protect the safety of your child.

Make sure that the toys are an authentic product and not a cheap imitation, which may indicate cheaper manufacturing. When shopping for toys, always make sure that you are getting what you pay for.

Monitor the message or rating that a toy or video game is promoting. These days, so many toys are promoting unhealthy messages or ideals. It is important to monitor the toys that your child enjoys in order to make sure that the influences they are getting are the best for their age.

Night Terrors

By Richard Myers

Babysitters are more likely to encounter a child having night terrors than nightmares. This is because nightmares usually happen in the early hours of the morning, whereas night terrors most often occur during the first four hours of sleep - typically 15 minutes to one hour after the child falls asleep. The major triggers are being overtired and a change of routine.

Up to 18% of children who suffer from regular night terrors also sleepwalk, so its important to keep them safe. Put a safety gate at the top of the stairs and dont have the child sleeping in a bunk bed.

If you know that the child is prone to night terrors, it can help to gently wake them for a moment, shortly after they have fallen asleep and then let them go straight back to sleep. If done each night, this is often enough to break the cycle and the child will sleep through the night.

Blood curdling screams…

Although it can be very alarming to witness a childs night terrors, it may help to know that they very rarely recall anything about the experience.

In a classic night terror, the child will wake up early in the night, sit bolt upright, have their eyes open and often scream in a terrified way. They will be inconsolable and may appear convinced that there are spiders, snakes, monsters or people in the room.

They may also be sweating and can hyperventilate. It may seem as if they are awake but they are most often still fast asleep.

The initial reaction for the onlooker is to wake them up out of their fear but waking a child from a night terror can make them more frightened and upset. It is better to put your arms gently but firmly around the child and lay them down, speaking quietly to them, all the time, until they settle down.

Classic night terrors can last anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes and following the incident the child will most often go peacefully back to sleep…leaving you a nervous wreck!

Educational Toys are No Longer The Wooden Blocks That I Remember

By Antony Wilton

The closest thing that I recall as an educational toy of my own was a set of wooden blocks and a matching hammer!

Today, there are quality, educational toys that define motor skills, expand maths development, as well as enhancing creativity.

You can start your baby off on the right foot with great educational baby toys. These are now safe, educational, environmentally aware toys and accessories, including musical instruments, science and nature items and much more.

Parents know that if the educational toys or baby toys are not appealing they will likely just sit on a shelf, so they are created to grab the imagination of the child immediately. These toys provide an educational experience while still generating fun and excitement for your baby.

Finding high quality educational toys that stimulate development and are fun to play with is vitally important. Parents these days are keen to inspire the natural latent wonder and genius that is hopefully evident in their children. LeapFrog is committed to developing the highest quality educational toys.

The year's top educational toys use arcade-style games, music, drawing and even characters from favorite children's TV shows to integrate learning and fun. The Leapster Multimedia Learning System from Leap Frog is an excellent example, and among the finalists for toy of the year. Out of all the electronic learning systems available in the market today, this one ranks pretty high up in the list. Its easy to use, very educational, with touch screen and backlit display enhancing its value.

Children can play, read, draw, and watch interactive videos. Learning games are available in your child's favorite cartoon character including Dora and Spongebob. Electronic storybooks can be read, and the Draw feature encourages budding young artists to exercise their creativity.

So its no longer a case of buying the biggest most colorful toy. Instead, look for those with a high-educational value that stimulate creativity and learning, and most importantly make learning fun!

Author Antony Wilton hosts a popular toy site at http://www.bestbuysite.com and regularly reviews new and innovative toys

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

By Hans Hasselfors

The term "Mesothelioma" in medical terms is defined as form of cancer that proliferates at a very fast rate after it has been diagnosed, which affects the mesothelial cells in the body. After detailed study of this disease by several scientists all over the world, it has been concluded that in most of the cases the reason is the direct contact with loose asbestos particles. This disease is generally known to be derived from an abnormality that arises from inhaling the loose asbestos particles suspended in the air for a very long time. The chances of the patients, diagnosed of mesothelioma, have very bleak chances of survival which is not more than one or two years and if it has been detected long back and rigorous medication has been started on the patient then the patient is likely to live for about five years.

There are three types of mesothelioma but the symptoms of the diseases depend on their kinds. The symptoms vary from one-another but the general symptoms that are found in patients suffering from different types of mesothelioma are weight loss, chest pain, loss of appetite, short breath , plain cough and cough with blood. Diagnosing mesothelioma in its initial stages is not possible because symptoms surface very late and that, these symptoms are no special signs indicating the particular disease but are common for other diseases too.

Generally the symptoms of mesothelioma resemble to that to any other normal lung diseases. Most of the symptoms arise in the lungs, where the mesothelial cells covering the lungs and the cavity between them are affected due to prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibers. Consulting with the physician is very necessary from time to time and necessary test must be conducted to detect the disease.

The main symptom of mesothelioma is a constant pain in the chest which is followed by short breaths and difficult breathing because of accumulation of fluid in the chest, which makes breathing all the more difficult. Some of the other symptoms of the disease include abnormalities in the lungs, which can be diagnosed under proper supervision of the doctor with a chest CT-scan.

Basically, the disease of mesothelioma advances in four stages. In the first stage, begins the formation of the tumor in the area of lining of the lung and doesn't exceed from one side of the lung. And then in the second stage the tumor extends to other organs in the chest cavity, such as heart. Then in the third stage its extents to the other abdominal organs affecting all the other organs too. Finally in the fourth and the last stage the tumor extends to all parts of the body and affects all the parts adversely. These are some of the symptoms of the disease of mesothelioma, by which the disease can be tracked in the initial stages of its occurrence.

Child Nutrition and Obesity

By Mark Neal

If the factors concerning the prevalence of obesity are to be studied separately, the primary concern would be food and nutrition. obesity partially relies on the nutritive factor of a subjects food intake. A child requires a chunk load of nutrition as it grows but are we truly giving them what they need? Again it must be made aware that child nutrition and obesity are related in such a way that poor nutrition leads to obesity.

The concern of child nutrition and obesity originates from excessive eating and no or minimum exercise. Most of the excess food eaten by kids or even adults are the famed high- calorie and high-fat foods that no matter how dangerous they are to our health, therere still there. To begin a good fight against child obesity, we must be armed with the right nutrition for children. Remember that growing kid require a good amount of energy from a well balanced diet. The basics of the food groups now prevails. Child nutrition must consist of fiber, vitamins and mineral content, carbohydrates and protein. High fiber is best sourced from whole wheat and other grains. This is also very important to an overweight or obese child. This type requires a good bulk of fiber in his/her system to help lose the excess weight. A childs nutrition is never complete without the 5-times-a-day serving of fruit and a similar serving of vegetables accompanied by dairy products, fish and the occasional red meat. If you now recall your old health class lectures, this is the basic nutrition required to maintain a healthy body. we are simply returning to a tweaked version of the basic nutrition requirements. an overweight or obese childs nutrition also require a low-carbohydrate and low-fat intake. Remember that the excess calories and fat are major contributors to obesity. Also increase the amount of antioxidants that help flush out what needs to come out.

You should be able to determine what lacked in the childs nutrition before the diet. Once you know them and realize the impact of child nutrition and obesity, youll be able to provide a childs proper nutrition. Lessen what isnt necessary and increase what is needed. This may be a small piece of the puzzle but it generates significant changes in the battle between child nutrition and obesity.

Child Recliners - How Do They Work?

By Craig J. Clark

These recliners are built on a smaller scale and usually do not have the same reclining mechanism that an adult recliner has. Many adult recliners have spring loaded reclining systems that are operated by a handle that protrudes from the right hand side of the chair. Pulling back on the handle and leaning back in the chair causes the mechanism recline. Child recliners generally do not have such a mechanism.

The child recliner mechanism functions in conjunction with the footrest. The child, or an adult if the child is very small, must pull up the footrest from the bottom. Pulling up the footrest causes the recliner to lay back. Kids are very nimble, probably more so than Grandpa J, and usually have no problem climbing in and out of the recliner even when it stays in its reclined position. Bigger kids will be able to recline and sit up in the recliner simply by pushing their backs against the seat back. They will be able to get up by sitting forward and pushing down on the footrest.

To my knowledge all child recliners work in this manner. Manufacturers tell us that the lever mechanisms arent currently made for small chairs and that they would increase shipping costs due to the need for larger boxes. If you find one with a handle mechanism, please let me know! craig@wcteam.com

A Good Attitude Can Help with Bedwetting

By Rose Randolph

If someone in your family had bed wetting problems, you may wish to tell your child this story, to make them feel more comfortable about themselves. Of course, it may also be embarrassing if your child chooses to share this story at the next family reunion.

Regardless, reassure your child that this problem will go away as time passes, and that many children wet the bed. Do not run out and buy every single product on the market that promises to help your child stop bedwetting - your child will gain the impression that this is so important to you that youll stop at nothing to end the bedwetting. Instead, form a plan from the available methods to help your child stop bedwetting and follow the plan until it does or doesnt work, or you see signs of a medical problem.

Remember that this will most likely just be a matter of time. Even if your child has secondary enuresis and you have removed the stress and gone to therapy, it can still take time for your childs sleep and bathroom habits to resettle, and thus for bedwetting to end. Give it time and patience, and you will get past this phase easily.

Basically: DO * Be patient * Clean up messes quickly, and if your toddler is older, have them help clean up, before washing hands thoroughly * On toddlers, using pull up diapers until they are ready to go the night without a diaper may make life easier * Put a rubber sheet on the bed * Realize that this is just a phase, and your child will grow out of this * Be flexible * Talk to your child about how the bladder works DONT * Yell at your child * Make them feel embarrassed or feel that bedwetting only happens to babies; its quite common in toddlers and happens to a lot of children as well

Rose Randolph provides families with information and resources related to bedwetting through her website at www.OvercomeBedwetting.com You may reprint this article, as long as you include all of the above text, authors information and a working link to www.OvercomeBedwetting.com

Child Car Seat Safety And A Box Of Cereal

By SadiePeterson

For most people, the need for true protection hits home as theyre leaving the hospital. A car seat is needed in order to get the little one home. And as with any product on the market, new and improved models are constantly being invented, thus making older models obsolete.

What do you know about child car seat safety? Are you aware of the current child car seat safety laws? A car seat that was once considered safe may no longer meet the standards of today.

And who would have thought a childs car seat would have an expiration date? Just like a box of cereal or a gallon of milk, they should not be used once they are past the expiration date.

While buying a car seat at a garage sale or even on ebay might be a great way to save some money, you need to be sure that the model you are buying for your little one meets current child car seat safety measures. That would also apply if you had a baby several years ago, kept all your baby things, and are now pulling that old car seat out of the attic to use with your newborn.

As unbelievable as it may seem, it is not uncommon to see a parent who has no respect for child car seat safety. There are people who still ride around in their cars with a baby in their arms. Not only is this unsafe for the child, but it makes the simple act of driving more hazardous.

There are many safety measures that are suggested for protecting your child, some more important than others. While some are almost frivolous and not so important, the key is knowing and acting on those that are the most crucial.

Child car seat safety is imperative for every parent to consider and should never be taken lightly. We all know and understand how dangerous motor vehicles are in the first place. Just imagine what could happen to your child if he or she is not properly secured. You would never forgive yourself if something happened to your child because of your ignorance.

Child Safety in the Car

By Greg Chapman

Most parents are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of their children, and feel confident that they are doing so by using a child safety seat for car travel. But the fact is that an alarming number of parents do not install safety seats properly, allow their children to graduate to a booster seat too early or fail to use a safety seat altogether, posing an enormous risk to their children's safety in the event of a wreck. With car accidents being the number one cause of accidental deaths in young people, utilizing the proper protection in the car for a child's age and weight is a serious responsibility for parents and is also required by law.

When used correctly, car seats significantly reduce infant deaths in car accidents. Still, improper use of a car seat is a very common mistake parents make. First of all, any infant one year of age or younger or weighing 20 pounds or less should be securely harnessed into a rear facing car seat reclined at a 45 degree angle in the back seat. Harness straps should be snug and at or below shoulder level, with the harness retainer clip that connects the straps positioned at the level of the infant's armpit. Additionally, all fasteners should be attached as recommended by the car seat manufacturer. The safety belt securing any car seat should be always be taut and locked.

Once a child has reached one year of age and weighs over 20 pounds, the car seat may be arranged facing forward in the back seat. The harness and seatbelt requirements as described for rear facing car seats also apply for forward facing car seats. The harness should be snug such that only one finger can fit between the harness and the child's collar bone. Placing a child in the back seat and away from airbags is extremely important for any of these situations.

Once a child has reached four years old, weighs at least 40 pounds and has outgrown his or her car seat, it is time to start using a booster seat in the back seat of the vehicle. A child must fall into the appropriate height and weight range recommended for the booster seat in order to have adequate protection. A booster seat lifts a child to the proper height to allow for safe use of the seatbelt, which involves the lower strap being positioned over the child's upper thighs and the shoulder strap fitting across his or her shoulder. The seatbelt must be properly routed through the booster seat in order to provide the protection for which the seat is designed. A child is ready to use a seatbelt with no booster seat only once he or she reaches a height of 58 inches (with a sitting height of 29 inches) and weighs at least 80 pounds. Additionally, the child must be able to bend his or her knees over the edge of the seat with his or her back firmly against the back of the seat. It is recommended for all children ages 12 and younger to ride in the backseat of a vehicle regardless of whether a booster seat is required.

Make sure to complete and return the enclosed registration card upon purchase of a car seat, so that you may be notified in case there is a safety recall on the model you purchase. Read and comply with all instructions and recommendations for your car seat. Failure to properly secure a child in a size and weight appropriate car seat can have devastating consequences in the event of an accident.

Bath Safety

By Homer Stand

A leading cause of death among children one to four years old is drowning. Not all these accidents can occur on a lake or in a swimming pool. Knowing how little water is actually required to drown a child one must consider bath safety a cause for concern. Approximately half of infants who do drown suffer the accident in the bath tub. It only takes a short time submerged to cause drowning.

Bath seats that many parents use can provide a false sense of security. A small child should never be left alone, even if they are in a product that is meant to increase their safety. If the parent gets distracted and leaves the child the worst could happen.

A simple accident can become very serious as a child cant correct the situation on its own. The same rule that applies outside applies to bath safety as well, never leave a child alone near water at all. It only takes a minute to remove the child from the water before you attend to the problem that came up, but only one accident while you are away could take your child from you.

It may seem like a good idea at the time, but only an adult can supervise a child or infant in water. Never leave a slightly older child in charge, even your 5 year old who has been constantly bothering you while you are bathing their younger sibling. No matter how well intentioned they may be they just dont have the same reactions to dangerous situations, and may not be large enough to even extract the baby from a danger. Calling for help may take a precious few seconds too long. It is poor bath safety to leave a child responsible another child.

You can make it easier to follow good bath safety. The trick is to gather everything you will need to bath your child beforehand. Perhaps you can have a small basket or bin that keeps all the soap, shampoo, and other products you need in one place. Also bring the towel that you will need to get the child out of the bath, remember never have the child out of arms reach. If you have to leave you will have to take the child with you, and that could be a very wet experience. Set everything up on a convenient surface near the fixture the child bathes in.

Visitation Rights - Time with Your Kids

By Rob Newby

When you and your spouse are deciding to separate or divorce you need to include your children in the conversation, if they are old enough to understand what is happening to them. Dont wait to spring the bad news. Children often feel they are the cause of the breakup. So the sooner you talk to them the better. Tell them how they will see both parents and how often. Recently I have been hearing a lot of men petitioning the court for increased visitation rights. They want to spend more time with their children.

A good visitation rights schedule should help with addressing some of your childs fears. It is very important how they are told their parents are separating. You should explain it to them in a manner that they can understand and not be afraid of what will happen next. Both parents must cooperate with each other for the benefit of the child.

Visitation rights isnt just a schedule where you dictate a time and place to pick up your child, but should be well thought out for the maximum benefit - Quality Time with the Child. You must take into consideration the age and gender of the child when planning activities. If the child is an infant, you may consider short, but frequent visits with the non-custodial parent, because they require more care.

Make Visitation Rights easy on the Children. Children want to send time with their non-custodial parent. Make that time Quality time for them. Be involved in their activities, even if its not your weekend. As children get older they want to send less time with their parents. Dont get offended when your teenager want to hang out with their friends on your scheduled time. Whatever visitation rights arrangement is agreed upon, you must concentrate on the wants and needs of the child and not on the rights or perceived rights of parents. I know I have focused on the children more than the parents regarding visitation rights, but as a product of divorced parents those are the things that stuck out for me.

I have a FREE report, giving you tips on winning favorable child custody and visitation rights arrangements at http://child-custody-secrets.com.

You can get the comprehensive Child Custody Package at http://child-custody-secrets.com/custodycenter.html If your going through a separation or divorce you need to protect your rights and you children as early as possible!

3 Ways To Protect Your Child On The Internet

By Kimberly Sturgis

Did you know that an estimated 725,000 people have been aggressively pursued for sex online? Are you aware that 1 out of 4 children have been sent pictures of people that were naked or having sex? Astonishingly, 1 out of 5 kids have been solicited for sex on the internet and 50%25 of people have had phone calls with someone they chatted with online. 84%25 of teen and preteen girls rely on common sense when determining whether someone is safe to chat with online. The internet is a big place, but there are real, trustworthy strategies that can be implemented to protect your child from online predators.

1. Talk To Your Kids

Ask questions about your child's internet activity and keep your eyes and ears open about internet trends. (myspace, bebo, etc.) Make sure that your child understands that they shouldn't believe everything that they see or hear online.

2. Set Guidelines For Your Child's Internet Usage

Just as we were told to never go with a stranger when we were kids, the children of today need to be told to never give out personal information(address, phone number, etc.) or ever meet in person someone that they have met online, without permission from you. Encourage your child to tell you if they ever encouter something or someone that makes them feel uncomfortable on the net.

3. Record Everything They Do On The Internet

There is excellent software on the market that can do it all. (record passwords, myspace activity, instant messages, email in and out, works in total secrecy and doesn't slow down your computer) Install it for virtual babysitting.

The critical element to protect your child on the internet is YOU. On the internet, as with all aspects of life, children need parents to guide them and to intervene when necessary. Even if you can't always be there to supervise online activities, you can still teach them to use the internet wisely and record activity so you know for sure.

Kimberly Sturgis is the proud mother of 5 children ranging in age from 2 to 17. She is constantly on the lookout for products and ideas to help keep children safe. To see her choice for the best internet safety product Click Here!

What You Can Do To Improve Your Kids Health

By Joshua Wills

First, nutrition is of utmost importance. You should limit junk foods, and beverages that contain empty calories. Children should eat foods that are selected from the food chart and should also take a vitamin and mineral supplement daily. Ask your pediatrician for recommendations on the best brand of vitamin and mineral for your childs specific needs.

Todays children do not get as much exercise as they need. Computers, video games, and other indoor activities encourage children to sit and be less active then ever before. Encouraging children to get daily exercise is vital to ensuring their health and well-being. Also, dont necessarily assume that they are getting as much exercise as they need in school. Today, many public schools are eliminating recess, adding to the problem of lack of exercise. Scheduling time each day for your child to have outdoor activities is a great way to make sure they are getting the exercise they need.

Children lead busy lives and hectic schedules. Setting a proper bedtime that enables them to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night is recommended. Depending upon the age of your child, they may need more or less. Ask your pediatrician how much sleep they recommend your child needs, and set limits to ensure they get that rest.

Ensure that children bathe regularly and that they use antibacterial soap. This is a great way to cut down on the amount of germs and bacteria that they are exposed to. Even little scrapes and cuts can become infected so treat scrapes regularly with a product like Neosporin to reduce the likelihood of infection. Always have children wash their hands, or use a hand sanitizer to prevent the spread of colds and flu. Finally, keep regular appointments with your childs pediatrician and dentist to ensure that they are receiving the proper medical and dental care to stay healthy and happy.

Teaching Your Child About Money At An Early Age You Are Doing Them A Huge Favor

By Robert Michael

Start by teaching your children to identify the different coins. This should be done at the beginning when the child is at a very young age. When you are out shopping with your child you can point out what money is used for and pointing out to them what is happening.

When your child gets to the elementary school age you might want to think about giving them an allowance on a weekly basis. This should be offered to each child. At this point it is not important how much the allowance is. Start teaching what appropriate uses of this money might be and what can happen if they spend their money in an irresponsible way. Now is a good time to express the importance of contributing part of their allowance to a charity or a local church. Teach your child why it is important to give to these organizations on a regular basis. There will come a time when your child will want to buy a specific item and you need to show them how many weeks they will need to save their allowance to be able to make that purchase.

Take your child to the grocery store with you to begin teaching your child the value of careful money management. Have your child look at different brands of the same product so they can figure out what would be the best value.

If you encourage your child to help with chores around the house this will help them learn a lot about money. Push your child to find ways to earn money.

Continue to give allowance to your children who are now teenagers but it should now be connected with household chores and other jobs they are obligated to complete.

In the late teenage years keep teaching your child about money by allowing your children to do the weekly grocery shopping, let them help put together a budget for a family vacations and teaching them how to fill out tax forms, if they are employed. Show your older teenage children how to obtain a small installment loan. This will help them learn the importance of a budget for regular financial responsibilities as well as help build their line of credit.

Your child will be much more prepared to be responsible with their money if you take the time now to teach your child how to manage their money.

Opening The Playhouse Door: Keys To Developing Your Childs Imagination And Creativity

By Patty Toner

As adults, we often have a hard time encouraging creative expression in children - maybe because we dont feel creative ourselves, or perhaps we dont understand and appreciate the lifelong benefits it offers our children.

Creativity means having the ability to express ourselves in our own unique way. Children are naturally creative. Their view of the world is fresh and original! It is our responsibility as parents and caregivers to nurture and foster this undeveloped talent.

There are four main areas in which children can express creativity:

* Art (expressing thoughts and feelings visually with crayons, paint, scissors, etc.)
* Language (expressing thoughts and feelings with written or verbal words)
* Music (expressing thoughts and feelings with physical movements, like dancing, singing, playing instruments, etc.)
* Fantasy (expressing thoughts and feelings through pretend like playing make-believe, creating imaginary friends, reading, etc.)

Creativity provides children with:

* Intellectual growth (thats why children ask all those questions!)
* The opportunity to explore their world
* A sense of self-worth and pride
* Exercise (which, in turn, stimulates physical growth)
* Opportunities to grow socially

When encouraging creativity in young children, it is important to remember it is the process, not the product, which is most important. 'Playing is a kind of experimentation, a way of stretching the boundaries without thinking about either rewards or punishments,' says Ruth Shagoury Hubbard in 'A Workshop of the Possible' (Stenhouse Publishers, 1996). 'The pleasure of the doing itself - the process - is the goal when we play.'

The world in which our children will live, work, and raise families will certainly be different than ours. Change is inevitable. But if we can equip them now with the keys to think creatively, and to deal with new situations and new people, then they will have the knowledge, capabilities, and confidence to improvise and adapt to whatever their futures might bring.

The Balance Between Keeping Children Happy Yet Safe

By Andrew Regan

The focal message for last weeks Child Safety Week 2006 was to remind families and child carers to put child safety first. Parents were encouraged to look out for and participate in local child safety events which took place across the UK. Themes included road safety and fire safety.

Research suggests that most accidents are caused by very simple things such as toddlers tripping on toys that have been left lying around or an older member of the family spilling a hot drink over a child whilst carelessly moving around. The Child Accident Prevention Trusts aim is to teach the public that preventing accidents does not have to be difficult. Its the small steps that count. For one, taking five minutes to teach children how to put their toys away can help towards making a difference. This would also contribute to making the house a tidier place - fantastic!

The toy market has been slated for supplying toys that are quite frankly unsafe. Some toy companies have a poor reputation primarily because many of the toys are regarded as the product of poor production practices and negligence. As a result importer countries around the globe are rapidly attempting to enforce new, stricter standards for toy manufacturers to follow.

The Child Accident Prevention Trust recommend that parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles carry out their research before they purchase toys for babies and young children. Some of the industries biggest brands such as Mothercare have a reputation for supplying high quality toys and products that comply with the safety standards set. The Mothercare site also has a section on child safety which is especially useful for parents and carers.

Why not create a balance between safety and education and invest more time in reading with your children. As adults most of us remember the stories we once loved that made up a special part of our childhood experience. Penguin books offer a fantastic selection of childrens books which are both educational and fun.

No matter what activity you decide to allow your children to participate in, remember a safe child is a happy child.
