What Parents Can Do To Help Children With ADD

The first thing you should do to help your child is research ADD; learn everything you can about the disorder. You will be more help to your child if you fully understand what they are up against, common treatments, and what to expect down the road. You will also be more prepared to work with your childs doctor in effective management of the disorder.

You should also decide, with the help of your doctor, if your child should be medicated. This is a personal decision and can be only be made by you. Some parents feel they are giving their child the best opportunity they can by providing a means to a normal life. Others feel as though medication is not an option. Whatever your decision, you should be educated and certain of your decision.

Regardless of if you use medication, you should implement certain behavior therapy guidelines to help your child control their behavior. These train your child to utilize lifelong skills to be effective and productive. You should have set behaviour guidelines, as well as consequences. Children with ADD need clear expectations and consistent discipline.

You should be supportive of your child; you are their best advocate. In school, be sure they are being treated in a manner that will ensure their growth and development, as well as at home. You should consider yourself, your childs teachers, and doctors a part of a team whose goal is to help your child succeed.

Help your child grow to be a confident and happy person. Acknowledge their strengths and tell them how much you love them. Advice For Parents Who Have A Child In Debt

There are a number of solutions to different problems that we come across in life and the advice I give in this article may not be suitable in every debt situation but is the way I would deal with my own childs debt problem.

One of the first people to contact would be one of the national organisations which deal with debt such as the national debt line. When your child had the courage to admit to their debt problem it would probably have come as a bit of a shock. The people at these organisations hear these same stories everyday and will have a great deal of information and advice to help you.

One solution that many parents think of is to basically pay off all of their childs debt straight away. They may contact each company that the child has a debt with and then make a payment to clear the debt. This is what I am sure the child would love to happen and may well work in the long run. I believe that this solution is however wrong as it does not really teach the child a lesson and why should the parents have to bail them out. Who is to say that in five years time the child will not be in the same situation again. A lot of them no doubt would not be and will be bright enough to stay out of debt in the future and will also be very grateful to their parents for being so generous. I have however heard of many cases where the child does not learn and then continues to perhaps over spend and soon becomes in debt again.

My advice would be to start the child on a debt management plan. This can be organised via the national debt line and is a free service. The beauty of this plan is that the interest from the debt is frozen and it is the interest that is normally what makes the debt become so large. The child then agrees an amount to pay each month, an amount that they have worked out that they can afford and then the debt slowly but surely starts to reduce. The amount that they have agreed to pay is normally far lower than the minimum monthly payment that they had been paying towards the debt which was likely to have only covered the interest anyway.

The child can see that within a certain period their debt will be cleared, should be happy that the interest is frozen and will also learn about debt management for the future. The advice the specialist who is assigned to their case will provide will be invaluable. The parents could help out financially on any month when their child is struggling to make the agreed payment as it is important to keep up with the repayments.

Unfortunately, this could not be further from the truth. Common sense dictates that the only time a childs fingerprints or DNA information would ever become necessary would be in the worst-case scenario, after the unthinkable has happened.

We as parents would like to watch over our children 24-hours a day, thereby, ensuring our childrens safety. However, this is unrealistic.

In situations where young children get separated from their parents as well as natural disasters such as: hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and tsunamis, we are reminded time and again, that children do not carry identification.

A Canadian company seems to have taken a very logical approach towards helping parents protect their children. Their small label can give parents great peace of mind as far as their children are concerned. School Tips For Parents Of An Adhd Child

Fortunately, the educational aspects of the toy can be kept well hidden behind the fun the child derives. However, what I do know is that an educational toy is a toy that helps a child learn something good, something that will help in the future.

Amongst the commandments a parent should strictly follow are the following:

1. Do not underestimate your child - he can understand more than you think he does and if you make him believe you think poorly of him this might affect his development.

2. Dont use threats - a child loves a challenge and once threatened he might go on and do what he wasnt suppose to just to see if he can escape the punishment.

3. Do not bribe your child - if you are trying to get him to learn for money, for example, he will fail to understand the importance of learning, all he will get from this is the importance of money.

4. Do not make a small child promise something - small children cant hold promises so dont force them to lie and then punish them because they did that.

5. Do not keep them under a short leash - to grow up normally children need some space, some freedom.

6. Do not use big words or too many words when you are talking to your child - keep your ideas simple and concise so he can understand every thing you have to say.

7. Do not expect an immediate and blind obedience - it is not recommended, the child has to learn to think for himself, not to follow orders.

8. Do not indulge him too much - he can develop compartmental disorders.

9. Do not compromise when it comes to the rules of a game - the trick for a game to be educational is to have its initial rules respected.

10. Dont impose rules that dont go with the age of your child.

11. Do not try to inflict guilt - guilt is not an appropriate feeling for children, especially if they are little.

12. Dont give your child orders that you dont take seriously - your child will try to please you and giving him an order is drastic. It becomes cruel if that order is a joke.

All these 'commandments' are addressed first to the parent. But they need to be referred to by teachers and educators as well. Along with the parents, they will settle upon an attitude and strategy for the education and growth of the child, so that they can give him all the things he needs to properly develop emotionally and physically.

A Parents Guide To Early Detection of Childhood Asthma

But how do you know if you should take your child to a doctor to determine if he or she has asthma? There are certain signs you can look for that will help determine if your child may be suffering from childhood asthma. If you detect any of these signs it is strongly recommended that you take your child to a doctor as soon as possible where a proper diagnosis can be made.

Coughing and wheezing are two prominent signs of asthma. Wheezing is like whistling sound when breathing and often occurs after a child has been running and playing. A tight feeling in the chest and shortness of breath after playing or exercise are also signs of asthma and if you suspect your child might have asthma you should pay close attention to your child during playtime and after playtime for these symptoms.

Colds can be difficult for children with asthma as the cold symptoms tent to concentrate on the chest, which affects breathing, and the colds tend to last longer. Children with asthma also tend to have more respiratory illnesses than normal and they are more severe. Often this is an indicator of 'hidden asthma.' Children with hidden asthma often do not show the 'classic' symptoms of asthma such as wheezing and this can make diagnosing asthma very difficult.

Allergies can also spark asthma symptoms and asthma attacks. Child Safety is Parents Responsibility

When travelling in a vehicle, regulations are now in place that require children under the age of 8 to sit in a car seat. The size of the car seat required changes as the child grows. Mothers are not allowed to take newborn babies home from the hospital unless there is a car seat installed in the vehicle. The carrying seat for infants and children less than 1 year old should never be placed in a front seat where the air bag is operational. When they are in the back seat they should be facing the rear rather than the back of the front seat and an adult should be in the back seat with the child. The child should be tightly installed in the seat with the harness straps secured snugly. From ages 1 to 4, the car seat can be placed so that the child is facing toward the front. Toddlers and young children sometimes need to have a booster seat so that they use the vehicle seat belts. The shoulder belt must rest across the chest and on the shoulder, but must never be placed under the childs arm.

Child Safety on the Internet

Parents must be cognizant of a childs usage of the internet because of the unsavoury characters they can come in contact with. There are some child safety methods parents can use to ensure that their children do not have access to pornographic sites or become email pals with someone who may intend to exploit them. Warning children never to give out information such as address, telephone number and the name of their school is sometimes not enough to protect them. Parents need to know the sites their children use and have a blocker on the computer that limits the access the children have to certain sites. Children should never be allowed to meet someone they talk to over the Internet, at least not without one of the parents being present. Advise them never to respond to messages from people they dont know.

Child Safety and Medicine

Medicines should always be stored in a cool dry place out of the reach of children. Brightly colored pills are very attractive and children may think they are candy. Online Advice For Parents

In order to protect your child online you are best off talking to them rather than just banning them from using the internet. By discussing your concerns and raising awareness of potential dangers then you should be able to wise up your child in the same way that you prepare them for the outside world. By simply banning their use of the internet you will encourage them to become more secretive and less open meaning you will have even less control of how they use the world wide web.

By following our simple precautions we hope that not only will you get a better understanding of the internet and what it has to offer, but also it will develop your relationship with your child and allow you to both be more open with each other.

- Ensure that your child never gives out any personal information about themselves or anyone else in their family to anyone that they do not know properly. This includes full name, school attended, email address, home address, telephone number and parents occupation.

- Discourage your child from using online private chatrooms, and if they do use a chatroom then stick to the public section. When using online instant messaging programmes, ensure they only accept invitations from people they know and to block strangers who contact them randomly.

- Tell your child to never to arrange to meet anyone, regardless of who they are, how old they are, and what they have in common. People arent always who they say there online. Of course it may be a perfectly innocent meeting by two similar aged children but nothing should be arranged without it being discussed with a parent, and no meeting should take place without an adult present.

- Speak to your Internet Service Provider about their child safety features. You may find you are able to regulate your childs use of the internet and block access to unsuitable sites. If you do block access to a particular site then discuss your reasons for doing so with your child so that they understand why you have done it.

- Remember that even if you have blocks in place that your child may still find a way around them. By being open with your child you would hope that your child will be open and trustworthy in return.

- Encourage your child to talk to you about their online experiences both bad and good. If you can, try and get involved with your childs internet use by looking at websites together. Should your child have a bad experience on the internet encourage them to talk to you about it. Try not to over react or blame the child. They will be scared and should not be made to feel bad if someone else has approached your child in an inappropriate manner.

- If you think your child has been approached by a paedophile then contact your local police. All UK forces have officers who specialise in internet crime. The sooner you report such an incident the more the police will be able to do in order to trace any potential paedophile.

- And finally, as already said above, encourage your child to use the internet in a fun and safe manner. Get to know what they look at and discuss with them anything you do not know or understand. Be open with them and in turn they will be open with you.

Its true. Most parents want to believe that their kids are gifted in some way. While it may be true that different kids have different talents and intelligences, there are simply some kids who are way over the top. Potty Training Mistakes Parents Make

You should be sure to always offer encouragement and support. If your child refuses to go, because if you start forcing him to go and sit on the potty you will only create a very angry and hostile atmosphere and can lead to more resistance. It can create negative associations with using the bathroom that can be hard to undo later, and can also cause your child to start bedwetting, which can be emotionally harmful. Try to approach this time of learning much the same as you did with other skills like sitting up, walking and talking.

Dont start potty training during a time of stress for your child. Even good stress is bad stress when it comes to potty training a kid. Marriages, new babies, and during vacations can be just as difficult for your child as a divorce, death or moving into a new home. If anything big and new is coming up in your lives, reconsider potty training until the time is past. Wait until life settles down and the normal flow of life comes back. This will help creates a secure place for your child and helps him place toileting easily alongside other routines.

Dont set deadlines in the training process or try to accomplish training in a set number of days. Young children dont work too well under pressure and they certainly dont have the same concept of time that adults do. Make sure that you are realistic with your time expectations from your child, which is really important if you are looking to potty train an infant. Programs that promise that your child will be potty trained in three days, one day or even 100 days arent being very realistic and they are certainly not taking your childs individuality into account. Each child has his own temperament and brings different skills to the table, so there is no set potty training method for any child.

Smooth First Day at Daycare - Tips for Parents and Providers

Mom Start gently preparing your child in advance mentioning what a great adventure day care will be with lots of friends and games. Keep it low key though do not overdo it as this could overwhelm your child. Provider You could provide mom with first names of children and carers at the day care and suggest role playing with dolls so everything is not completely strange on that first day.

Mom should try to foster independence in the weeks preceding with visits to friends, washing own hands etc and providers should be sure to encourage mom and child to visit the day care a couple of times before starting allowing the child to absorb the environment.

Mom should be sure to have everything packed for the day e.g. snacks, change of clothes, comfort toys and ensure everything is labelled. Be sure and have monies paid and forms completed before the big day so you are not distracted by these tasks. Have lots of time to get ready the morning of the big day with a good breakfast and some chat about the great adventure ahead. Carers should have an extra person on hand when a new child is starting so that one person can focus on distracting and comforting the new child. It is also advisable to have the child start at a time when everyone is settled into their morning activities I wouldnt recommend first thing in the morning when the flurry of activity could be upsetting for the new child.

Allow the child to help pack his bag and carry it. When you arrive at the day care walk your child in holding his hand, do not carry him. Providers should insist on this therefore avoiding the peeling child off the parent scenario.

All day cares should have a settling in period where the child will stay for gradually longer periods of time. Facilitate the moms so they can be around but discourage too much mom involvement. This is where mom needs to take a back seat and observe rather than interact. Provide one on one support for the child. He may just want to sit and observe for a while eventually venturing into a group to participate or play alone with a toy. Let him go at his own pace. When mom leaves, distract him immediately ushering him off to some exciting activity.

Mom,the first day of settling in you will probably stay in the room, allowing your child to do his own thing but remaining in sight. Gauge his reactions perhaps stepping out of the room momentarily explaining that you are making a phone call and are just in the hall. Allow the staff to distract your child and observe from a distance (obviously, do not let him see you). When the time comes for you to sit in the car or go for a coffee say, bye mom will see you later, positively with a quick kiss and leave the room. If your child cries do not look back, remember, once you are out of sight the child will stop crying shortly and will be distracted by play and activities.

It is very important to establish this drop off routine from day one. Firm and consistent is key with children. Communication and understanding between parents and providers will make for a smooth and enjoyable transition for the child. Now, moms, enjoy your cup of coffee in peace!!! Spelling Games Parents Can Play With Their Kids

The first game involves scrambling the letters of one word in a sentence then letting the child unscramble the letters so the sentence makes sense.

Parents can also let their child draw pictures to go with these words then write a story about the pictures.

Parents can attach labels to objects around the house and let the child read them, afterwards the parents can remove the labels and let the child point out the objects, name them then spell out their names.

Parents can opt to buy computer games now on the market which are geared for first-grade level spellers.

Parents can write down spelling words on large slips of paper then place these in a container like a box. Then they can pull out one slip of paper at a time, read the word and have the child spell it out for them.

Parents can bake cookies with slips of spelling words inside these. As the child eats his cookie, he will find the slip of paper and be able to read it. The parent will then collect the slip of paper and ask the child to spell out his word from memory.

Parents can hide large pieces of paper around the house (each piece of paper has a spelling word on it) then ask the child to hunt for a particular word. Only when the child finds the correct word will he be rewarded.

While watching television together, the parent can ask the child to spell out words they hear on TV. This is crucial for developing the childs listening skills since he will rarely see the word spelled out on TV.

Or another activity that parents can ask their children to do is to take out a book and hunt for a certain word chosen by the parent. Or maybe the child can point out a word and then close the book and spell it from memory for the parent.

Parents may also encourage their children to play spelling games with their other friends. Playing with friends help children to be more excited with the spelling games. Make sure that the children are always motivated. You may incorporate spelling with their favorite games and sports.

It is important for parents to learn to reward their kids for spelling words correctly. it may be just a kiss or a hug, or something material such as a treat like ice cream or a candy bar, or even a short trip to the park. The main thing about rewards is that the child will feel that his efforts are acknowledged by his parents.

Not rewarding the child may make the efforts of both the child and his parents fruitless since the childs behavior is not reinforced. The child learns through this system that hard work is rewarded while parents learn to be patient teachers even though their child may make mistakes.

Child Safety is Parents Responsibility

When travelling in a vehicle, regulations are now in place that require children under the age of 8 to sit in a car seat. The size of the car seat required changes as the child grows. Mothers are not allowed to take newborn babies home from the hospital unless there is a car seat installed in the vehicle. The carrying seat for infants and children less than 1 year old should never be placed in a front seat where the air bag is operational. When they are in the back seat they should be facing the rear rather than the back of the front seat and an adult should be in the back seat with the child. The child should be tightly installed in the seat with the harness straps secured snugly. From ages 1 to 4, the car seat can be placed so that the child is facing toward the front. Toddlers and young children sometimes need to have a booster seat so that they use the vehicle seat belts. The shoulder belt must rest across the chest and on the shoulder, but must never be placed under the childs arm.

Child Safety on the Internet

Parents must be cognizant of a childs usage of the internet because of the unsavoury characters they can come in contact with. There are some child safety methods parents can use to ensure that their children do not have access to pornographic sites or become email pals with someone who may intend to exploit them. Warning children never to give out information such as address, telephone number and the name of their school is sometimes not enough to protect them. Parents need to know the sites their children use and have a blocker on the computer that limits the access the children have to certain sites. Children should never be allowed to meet someone they talk to over the Internet, at least not without one of the parents being present. Advise them never to respond to messages from people they dont know.

Child Safety and Medicine

Medicines should always be stored in a cool dry place out of the reach of children. Brightly colored pills are very attractive and children may think they are candy. WHAT DO ALL PARENTS NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR CHILD GOES TO SCHOOL?

The Importance of Reading to Children Books for children are a great way to spend quality time and form a bond with your child. Reading to your children is not only fun and exciting but educational for the child; this has long been well known in the field of child development.

One of the best ways to help a child 'learn how to learn' is to read to them. * read to your child every day * read books with pictures, repetitive big words and short sentences * when a child can say a word show them the written word * start with naming words (nouns) * then name verbs (action words) and act them out * label the items in your house, write the names in big (at least 2 inch) letters * always use large print text as a childs visual pathways are not fully formed in the early years * play games with words, pictures and rhyming sounds * stop and ask 'what do you think will happen next?' * run you finger under text - left to right, top to bottom, front to back * start with alphabet recognition * sound out the different sounds for each letter * sound out words

Reading is the bond between yourself and your child and an investment in their future! The main key to any storybook is that it should be a sensory, play-based activity and above all be fun.
