Emotional Problems And Depression In Children

By Paul Kanute

Here are some useful tips on what parents need to know about spotting the signs of depression in children and how professional care, combined with skillful parenting, can help restore and promote a childs good mental and emotional health.

Cause and symptoms

Depression can be caused by any number of factors: traumatic events, such as the death of loved one or divorce among parents; a chemical imbalance in the brain; mental or emotional problems that run in the family.

Irritability, chronic fatigue, social withdrawal, poor school performance, lethargy and mood swings are all signs to look for in depressed children, Abnormal sleeping and eating patterns are also common in children suffering from depression.

Parents need to pay close attention for warning signs and then seek professional help from a medical expert if they believe their child id suffering from depression. Early detection and treatment of mental illness is crucial for children, and early intervention and management leads to happier and healthier child and adult.

Effective treatment options

Childhood depression can be successfully treated with professional counseling and, if necessary, medication. Counseling usually includes both the parents fully engage in their child, so its important that parents fully engage in their childs treatment. If medication is prescribed, then parents need to closely monitor their child to determine if it is working as intended and that no harmful side effects are present.

Supportive parenting

Aside from seeking professional help, the most valuable thing a parent can do for child suffering from depression is to provide strong emotional support. A child, even if depressed or emotionally detached, can sense if his parent are working for his recovery.

Understanding The Facts About Bipolar Depression

By Candice Sabrina

Bipolar disorder, or manic depression as some people call it, is a very frightening condition to live with. The symptoms of this disorder can be harsh, they can come and go rapidly and they can lead to mood swings that are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum. Bipolar depression is the particular swing that can present some of the most problems for those who suffer from the condition.

To understand bipolar depression, it's a very good idea to have a basic grasp on this condition in its entirety. Those who suffer from this condition tend to endure very extreme mood swings. Manic behavior is on one end of the spectrum and depressive the other.

The swings are not caused by a desire to get into trouble. They are not caused by a psychological problem, per say. Rather, the root of this medical phenomena is an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain. When these chemicals are out of whack, behavior can be, as well.

While both phases of bipolar disorder can cause very real, very lasting problems for those who suffer from the disorder, it is the depressive phase that can be the most troubling. This is so for a number of reasons.

First off, bipolar depression is generally the phase that causes misdiagnosis. Doctors recognize the depressive symptoms and fail to recognize the manic ones. This means a person suffering from this very real, very biological condition is more likely to be treated for the single phase, rather than the entire disorder.

Make no mistake, however, the blame doesn't necessarily fall entirely on the doctors. It is possible the patients and their family members, too, fail to connect the manic episodes with the depressive ones. This can mean a doctor is forced to treat a patient with only half of the picture to go on.

Since this condition involves a chemical imbalance, the medications used to treat depression might not always be helpful. A careful management of bipolar disorder needs to be present to help ensure a patient leads as close to a normal life as possible.

The second major reason bipolar depression is a big problem is the symptoms themselves. Often mirroring true, clinical depression these symptoms can range from loss of appetite and fatigue to feelings of helplessness, sadness and guilt. It is even possible that thoughts of death and suicide will be present and even acted on. The suicide rate for untreated bipolar depression is higher than many might think.

The depressive phase can also be misidentified as nothing more than "the blues." Since the bipolar patient can go through such extreme mood swings, it can be very difficult for the person suffering and those around them to take the depressive state and recognize it for its seriousness.

Living with manic depression requires very careful management. While there is no known cure for the condition, there are treatments that can help keep its most troublesome symptoms in check. When the disorder is properly treated, the signs of bipolar depression and even the manic phases are kept well under wraps in most cases.

Emotional Problems And Depression In Children

By Paul Kanute

For parents, just making sure your child is physically fit and healthy can feel like a full-time job. But parents should also be aware of potential mental and emotional problems that can affect a child's development, because they can be just as serious as any physical ailment and carry on through adulthood.

Living and Coping with ADD

By TRICORI.COM

Affecting between five and twenty percent of children, ADD is not specifically a childhood problem, as many children who suffer with this disorder continue to have problems well into their adult years. The symptoms of adult ADD, however, are generally not as marked as during childhood– generally because the sufferer has learned to cope with their disorder over time. Boys are usually affected ten times more often than girls.

Some typical behaviors associated with Attention Deficit Disorder can include:

- Having trouble concentrating on school work - Being easily distracted when working on a task - Easily forgetting simple instructions for tasks - Daydreaming frequently - Rarely finishing tasks assigned - A marked rise in impulsive or unpredictable behavior - An inability to sit still for a period of time - A constant need to have the attention of others

The persistence of any of these symptoms may be cause to consult with your family doctor about ADD testing. This condition has now been shown to be a hereditary condition, caused by a chemical imbalance in the neurotransmitters within the brain. These chemicals are responsible for sending messages around the brain and they essentially control how we function and behave.

The treatment of ADD calls for a 'team' approach in order to handle it properly. Parents, health professionals, and sometimes psychological and speech professionals must all work together to help a child or adult with ADD learn to function better. Having a plan that allows for a consistent and stable approach to the problem will help the child most. Strict discipline is not the answer, as the child has done nothing wrong. The behavior of the child should never be thought of as deliberate or willful with this disorder.

Getting the child to handle small tasks and offering frequent praise for any positive actions is reassuring and helpful to the child. Try to avoid having too many parts to the task required of the child. Simple and easy-to-accomplish tasks will work best. Writing down the details of the task or even having the child do this is always helpful and allows them to focus on the task at hand.

Having the child repeat back what you ask them to do is not only a way to check that they understand the request, but also allows them to focus on what they should be doing.

Trying to always have eye-to-eye contact with the child will force a focus on the task being requested. You can set a specified time for the child to have the task completed and always remember to praise every positive aspect of the childs behavior. Encourage the child to find a quiet area in which to try and accomplish small, manageable tasks. This will help him or her to focus on what needs to be done. Teach the child how to store their favorite items (such as toys and games), in areas where theyll be safe and always in the same place. This will help to provide a consistency to their personal corner of the world.

Shaken Baby Syndrome Can Cause Brain Injury

By Sara Goldstein

Caretakers and parents who have become frustrated with a crying baby may shake them violently in an effort to silence them. The shaking does quiet the crying child by damaging his brain. Children living in poverty are the victims of shaken baby syndrome more often than those not living at the poverty level. Male caretakers are estimated to be the perpetrators of shaken baby syndrome between 60-90% of the time, and over 60% of the victims of shaken baby syndrome are male infants.

Shaken baby syndrome typically affects children under one year of age due to their underdeveloped brain structure, but cases have been reported in children up to four years of age. Babies who survive being shaken often develop symptoms that last a lifetime including seizures, blindness, hearing loss, cognitive dysfunction, paralysis and mental retardation.

How Does Shaking Damage the Infants Brain?

When adults shake their infant, the infants still-undeveloped brain is moved about violently. Since their little necks do not have muscles developed enough to stabilize their own heads, the brain shakes within the skull causing torn brain tissue and ruptured blood vessels. The shaking, in turn, causes swelling in the brain; the swollen tissue constricts blood flow to the childs brain, preventing its development and contributing to blood clots.

Shaken babies often stop crying as the shaking progresses and the brain damage becomes more severe. The degree of the traumatic brain injury caused by the shaking depends on the severity and repetition of the shaking. Some signs of shaken baby syndrome are lethargy, inability to lift the head and focus the eyes, lack of vocalization, decreased appetite and lack of smiling. Because parents and caretakers know they are the cause of these symptoms, they often will not take the children to the hospital for fear of criminal charges being placed against them.

There are ways to prevent shaken baby syndrome. Parenting classes and stress relief techniques can help minimize the frustration felt by the parent. It is appropriate to play with a baby safely and jiggle your infant on your knee in a soft, playful way; however, shaking a baby in anger will cause brain damage that could last a lifetime.

Shaken Baby Syndrome Results in Traumatic Brain Injury

What Are the Causes of Bipolar Disorder?

By Li Ming Wong

Bipolar disorder is a difficult illness to manage and to treat. Many who have it may ask themselves, "Why me? What caused all this?" There are great disagreements as to the causes of bipolar disorder. They all tend to go back to the old nature/nurture controversy. In other words, does a thing happen to a person because of who he or she is, or because of the environment he or she grew up in?

The nature side of bipolar disorder causes has always been seen in family histories. This, however, can be misleading. Families often pass behaviors on from one generation to the next, regardless of whether family members are natural relatives or adopted ones.

The scientific concept of correlation without causation may account for shared histories of bipolar disorder in biologically unrelated siblings. This concept is easy to grasp. For example, a man could state that all summer, every time he got a sunburn he ate fish. So, did the sunburn cause the man to eat fish? No, but the act of fishing both caused the man's skin to burn and allowed him to catch a fish, which he then ate. In a similar way, bipolar disorder can occur in families without anything in one family member's bipolar disorder causing the bipolar disorder of another.

Also, for whatever reason, people with bipolar disorder are often drawn to each other. In this case it is unclear whether the families formed come together because of their shared genetically similar predisposition towards bipolar disorder, or whether some members of the families are genetically more prone to bipolar disorder but the illness of some other members of the family becomes exaggerated more than it would in another environment.

Research into the genetic causes of bipolar disorder is often done using twin studies. It is assumed that twins will have environments that are as close as is possible. Identical twins are used to show the effects of genetics, since they will share the same genetic materials. Fraternal twins are used as a control group. While these twins share nearly identical environments with their twins, the fraternal twins have less genetic material in common.

It has been shown through these twin studies, and other studies where identical twins are compared to adopted siblings, that there does seem to be a genetic basis for bipolar disorder. Only one percent of the population has bipolar disorder. Fraternal twins, who share some genetic information, are 20 percent more likely to have the disease if one has it. The percentage for identical twins is even higher, at around 60 to 80 percent chance of one having it if the other does.

Environmental causes of bipolar disorder are more difficult to assess. Bipolar disorder has been proven to have a chemical basis in the brain, but the chemical reactions can be caused by any number of factors. A history of losses early in life can be a contributing factor, as can any major source of stress. Physical illnesses such as cancer and others can lead to a depressive state, which is then often followed by mania.

Neither genetics nor environment can fully explain the causes of bipolar disorder. Research is constantly being undertaken in both areas. In the meantime, the nature/nurture controversy is just beginning to heat up.

Your Childs Anger May Not be What You Think It Is

By MaryLynne White

When a child responds angrily to a parents message, that message has not gone to the thinking part of the childs brain. No, it has not reached the front part of the brain that does logical, rational thinking and problem solving. It has actually traveled to the part of the brain dealing with emotions. Most people know this as the limbic system, which is located in the central part of the brain. I call this the lizard part of the brain because it has no thinking abilities whatsoever; it merely reacts.

Have you ever noticed how angry, upset children (and some adults) appear as irrational? Theyre in the lizard part of their brain and cant think straight. Theyre not trying to control and manipulate you. Whats happening is something lying underneath the surface of their conscious mind. Underneath the anger is a feeling of fear. Its totally unconscious so usually both parents and children are unaware of it. When a child becomes angry and moves toward a temper tantrum stage of feelings, what the child is non-verbally telling you is: • 'I cant think–Im in the lizard part of my brain and I dont know how to get out of it to the thinking part where I can talk you in a way that makes sense.' • 'I need your help–I dont know what to do; Ive become so upset, Ive regressed to about the age of 2 or 3.' Would you expect a 2 year old to be able to sit down and have a rational, logical conversation with you? I dont think so! And yet, that is the very thing many parents attempt to do when their child is angry and upset. Can you see the waste of energy that gets expended doing this?

What you as a parent can do to help your angry child is to remain calm. Think like a super nanny on the front lines of parenting. The first thing you have to do is to help your child move to the thinking part of his or her brain. To do this, calmly (and with no sarcasm) 1. Ask your child, 'What part of your brain do you think youre using right now, the lizard part or the thinking part?' if the answer is, 'lizard part', then ask, 2. Is that working for you? Are you getting what you want?' If your child tells you 'no', then go the next question, 3. 'What do you need to do to get back to the thinking part of your brain?' If the child says, 'I dont know,' let him or her know you can see the shift has already happened because your child is answering your questions. This is a good thing! 4. If your child has calmed down a bit, ask if he or she needs some time to think about what just happened so you can talk about it together and come up with a way to handle the situation differently next time. If the child responds with a 'no', give a hug and say something like, 'You are always so much nicer when youre using the thinking part of your brain.' Then, walk away.

The next time, youre faced with an angry child ask yourself two important questions before you respond: 1. What part of the brain is my child using right now? 2. At what age do I usually see these behaviors in a child If your child is in the lizard part of the brain and acting like a toddler, this would not be a good time to talk. Get your child so he or she can think rationally, calm down and then go for the talk. You cant talk to a toddler (or anyone else for that matter) when hes upset. Help him calm down simply by acknowledging his angry feelings and be there with a smile and a hug (regardless of how youre feeling). This is a small gesture and will pay big benefits for you down the road.

Spotting Bipolar Symptom Possibilities Can Lead To Help

By Samantha Kay

Living with bipolar disorder can be difficult at best. Getting the correct diagnosis and treatment is generally the first hurdle to overcome in helping a person lead a normal, productive life. The hitch with coming up with the correct diagnosis in this case is that bipolar symptom possibilities tend to come in two completely different sets.

An estimated 70 percent of all those with diagnosed bipolar disorder have suffered through incorrect diagnosis and treatment. The most common misdiagnosis for this condition is depression, since the signs of this particular phase tend to be a little more troublesome for those around a patient. Unfortunately, misdiagnosis tends to lead to poor or incorrect management of the condition, which means individual bipolar symptom possibilities can still arise.

This biological condition does not have a blood test to screen for it. It also does not have any terribly easy to spot signs. Generally, a person must endure several full swing episodes before there is even a chance for diagnosis and treatment of the chemical imbalance in their brains that causes this condition.

The most common bipolar symptom and signs will depend on the phase of the cycle. For example, a bipolar symptom in the manic phase will likely be quite different from those present during the depressive state.

Some of the most common bipolar symptom possibilities, by phase include:

Manic

During this phase of bipolar disorder a person's mood is greatly elevated and they tend to be the life of the party, but some more serious bipolar symptom possibilities might arise, as well. They include:

* Inflated ego or self-esteem. People who display this bipolar symptom tend to have an elevated self-worth and also tend to misjudge their own abilities and talents.

* Racing thoughts. This symptom has people moving from subject to subject in speech without much rhyme or reason.

* Lack of sleep. Those who are in the manic phase are known to go long periods of time without sleep or rest.

* Increase risk taking. The manic phase also brings about, or can, a lessened inhibition to taking risks. This might mean a person will become sexually active with strangers, might take drugs or could be more willing to go into debt and make very bad financial decisions.

Depressive

The typical symptoms of this state tend to mirror actual clinical depression. This is the number one reason so many people with bipolar disorder are misdiagnosed. The symptoms of this phase include:

* Feelings of sadness, guilt or hopelessness.
* A lack of desire to perform normal activities, including favorite hobbies.
* Appetite changes. This might include a lack of desire to eat or binging on some food items.
* Fatigue.
* Thoughts of suicide or death.

When mood swings are evident and symptoms from both side of bipolar disorder are present, it is extremely important for people to push for the right diagnosis. When a bipolar symptom is spotted and the trend is there, getting help can lead to control. This means a correct diagnosis can keep the symptoms in check and help those who suffer from this condition lead relatively normal lives.

Do You Want More Brain Power for Your Child?

By Anandrahi

And to improve the brain power of a person we have to influence the non-stop neural conversations with positive pushes. But dont think only a psychologist can understand the intricacies of your brain and has the art of influencing it to increase its power. By taking a few steps any parent can achieve the goal of developing a super brain in his or her child.

You will definitely agree that in modern world most of the parents devote a lot of time and energy in finding ways or schools to help the children develop a super brain. Good schools give special emphasis on the brain power of the children. Most of the parents are worried that their child is not performing well at school. They do whatever is there in their capacity so that they may be proud of their children.

Here are a few simple steps which will certainly help parents to start the action at home - the best place to develop a wonder child with a super brain.

See the Limits of Your Child

Every child has some limits so you just cant enforce your desires. Pushing any child hard actually may damage its psychology as well as unique talent. So go easy and understand the nature and the limitations of your child.

Find out the Good Points

Every child is made unique in some way. So observe that unique quality. Sometimes a unique quality of a child just lies dormant in his mind till there is a provocation to rouse it. Understand it and develop it with love and care. It is the best way to boost confidence. Let your child involve more in those activities in which he can show more ability. Whenever a child is able to do a thing well there is a surge of confidence. And confident brains are always more sharp. You may take the help of a wise teacher or psychologist to understand the unique quality of your child in its true manner.

Create a Friendly Atmosphere at Home

Parents must create a friendly atmosphere at home to provide a fine nurturing ground. It is necessary to remove the barriers from the psychology of a child. Fear causes obstruction and a child is unable to develop fully. Especially the unique quality of your child, that is still lying dormant, may take a few more years to surface.

Ask Questions and Answer the Questions without Irritation

It is true that all parents love their children; nevertheless, most of them get irritated at the questions of children. You need total patience and a rational attitude towards your child. Also create an atmosphere of asking questions at your home. A child must be often asked questions almost daily. And questions should be framed in such a way that a child is able to answer most of them (not all of them). Also encourage the child to ask questions. Such an atmosphere gives necessary boost to the brain of a child. Parents should always realise that showing curiosity about various things is a natural tendency of a child. If a child starts repressing his feelings or thoughts, it may hamper the healthy growth of brain power.

Help the Child Sleep with a Positive Mind

Moments of sleeping time are extremely important in the development of the personality of a child. Unfortunately most of the parents ignore it. Fill positive thoughts in the mind of a child and help him relax before sleeping. It will boost his confidence and brain energy marvellously.

By taking all these steps the parents can see the miracle happening in near future. And they will be happier by the performance of their child.

Bipolar Disorder Explained

By Jason Hunter

Bipolar disorder at one time was known by the term manic depression. People diagnosed with this problem went from deeply depressive moods to wildly high moods. A person in the grasp of a manic episode can be in a state of pure euphoria or extreme irritability. Their thought patterns can be grand with whatever they are doing, seen as the best or greatest ever, or paranoid, imagining aliens following monitoring their every move. Other symptoms of bipolar disorder include poor judgment, offensive behavior, promiscuity, spending sprees, reckless behavior, increased energy and activity, and a reduced need for sleep.

To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, the person must currently be in a manic episode, must have had one previous major depressive, manic, or mixed episode that cannot be accounted for by some other schizoid, psychotic, or delusional disorder.

Studies indicate that approximately 30 percent of depressed patients under treatment may have bipolar disorder. Almost two percent of the entire adult population in the U.S. suffers from the affliction. Many studies show that 25 to 50 percent of bipolar patients attempt suicide at least once. Studies show that 15 percent succeeded, 30 times the rate found in the general population.

Numerous areas of the brain may be involved in bipolar disorder. They include the amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus, cerebellum, prefrontal cortex, striatum, and pallidus. Researchers are beginning to study the physical structure of the brain to see if there are differences between a normal brain and the brain of a bipolar patient. Early studies suggest there may be abnormalities in the structure and blood flow of these particular areas of the brain, but there have not yet been enough studies with the proper controls to come to a definite conclusion.

Treatment for this disease most likely involves being on medication for life, which would provide credibility to the idea that perhaps there is some type of permanent change or difference in the bipolar's brain structure and circuitry. The types of medication that are currently found to be the most effective are the antidepressants bupropion and SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) can also be used.

Omega-3 may help ease the symptoms of bipolar disorder patients and work as an alternative to lithium as a mood-stabilizing agent by inhibiting neuronal signals.

Although bipolar disorder requires a lifetime of treatment with medications - a proper diet including omega-3, the maintenance of bipolar disorder may be easier and more effectively accomplished. Results of the tests with fish oil capsules found that 64 percent treated with omega-3 responded to treatment, and remained in remission much longer after termination of the supplement.

How to Identify the Signs of Autistic Disorder

By Jon Arnold

Think of it like this. You get an idea in your mind, and you want to turn and tell that idea to me. Your idea forms and then your brain turns your idea into words which you can say to me. I can hear your words, and my brain turns them back into an idea that I can understand, and I also automatically pick up on your body language as well.

With autistic disorder, one or more of these steps it takes to transfer and receive ideas and words are damaged, or not working properly. There are different levels of autism, ranging from severe to mild. When a child has a more severe form of an autistic disorder, (s)he may not be able to communicate at all. If you think this is frustrating to you, think about the childs point of view. So many thoughts and ideas that you want to share and receive, yet your brain will not allow it to happen. The child may be confused or scared. This leads to strange behavior that may include several different things.

Ritualistic Behavior - A child with autistic disorder may want to perform daily activities the same way every time, such as dressing in the same clothes or eating the same foods. It is actually very stressful for the child to have their routine changed.

Sameness - A child with autistic disorder may be afraid of or angry at the thought of change. For example, he may become disturbed at his bedroom being rearranged, or getting a new outfit.

Self-Injury - This includes actions a child with autistic disorder may do to injure himself, such as biting or scratching. This can affect about 30% of children with autism.

Trouble or failure communicating - This can be noticed from a very early age, and can include babbling, wild gestures or movements, repetitive babbles or words, and words that are backwards.

Autistic Behaviors usually show themselves before age 3. You can recognize behavior of severe autistic disorders in a child as young as 1 year of age. There is no single behavior that you will see and be able to know that a child has autistic disorder, however, these behaviors seem to be the most common behavior in children with autism.

If you think your child or a loved ones child may have an autistic disorder, the child should be taken immediately to an autistic disorder specialist for consultation. You might consider asking your family doctor for a reference for this. The earlier the child is diagnosed, the easier it may be to deal with the disorder. While there is currently not a known cure for autistic disorder, research is ongoing, and there are things that can be done for the child to make learning easier for them.

Childhood Illnesses and Holistic Medicine

By Kathryn Beach

We take on a great responsibility in giving birth to and raising a child. Caring for a child's health is not a task to be taken lightly. It's the same in home business and in childraising: you need to carefully envision your final goal and map out a plan, a strategy for attaining that goal. An entrepreneur hopping from opportunity to opportunity is just that: opportunistic. We can't afford to be opportunistic concerning our children's health; we need to prepare ourselves with knowledge about basic good health, childhood illnesses, their symptoms, and holistic remedies.

What we call standard, or conventional, medicine is based on a certain medical model. This model defines health as lack or absence of disease, and the doctor has little to say to you if you are healthy. He is very used to seeing patients only when they are ill, the causes are determined to be bacteria and viruses or chemical imbalances, and accordingly he prescribes drug, surgical, and radiation therapies to suppress symptoms. Even though the conventional physician may recognize a disease's mental component, he will prescribe treatment or medication designed only to suppress the symptoms, whether they be physical or psychological.

Holistic medicine defines health as a balance between all the systems that make up our being, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Any number of stresses to any one of these systems can express itself as illness; it is the holistic physician's calling to help us identify deeper instabilities, weaknesses, and imbalances and correct them to reattain health.

The easiest way to fight childhood diseases is to build a strong immune system, which will reduce your child's vulnerability to disease. We all know of instances where numerous people are exposed to viruses and germs but not all develop signs of illness. With a strong immune system childhood diseases need no longer be feared and once a particular disease has been contracted naturally, there will usually be a lifelong immunity to it.

It is the duty of all parents to educate themselves regarding the symptoms, signs and course of childhood diseases. There are many available naturopathic and homeopathic remedies and therapies. These remedies have few or no known side effects, unlike their more conventional counterparts. There is also evidence to show that after recovering from a childhood disease a child's immune system will be strengthened and the child will also make a developmental leap (according to the studies of Rudolf Steiner).

No one enjoys watching their children suffer through illness, but, armed beforehand with knowledge, holistic remedies and well-planned strategies, no parent will be left unprepared and the children will be healthier, stronger and safer.

NoneKathryn Beach's website "Healthy Lifestyle" shares what she's learned from over 30 years of living with natural remedies, holistic medicine, and all the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual factors that contribute to building natural immunity to disease. She raised two healthy children without dangerous immunizations and chemical medicines, and now co

Natural Health Medicine And Your Childs Health

By Emmanuel Aubrey

Natural health medicine is the option to choose as it has hardly any side effects, which are far more common in medicines that contain concentrated chemical compounds. In addition to reducing side-effects, natural health medicine will also provide the best protection for your childs immune system so that it will strengthen.

This is why parents are now starting to emphasize healthy choices at young ages; they realize that this will encourage their children to replicate this behavior later on in life when they make choices.

We all know that children need to be active, as that is the best way that they learn. So when you give them natural health medicine when they are ill, you will be helping them get onto their feet as soon as possible.

Because natural health medicine also helps boost the immune system and it also strengthens the immune system, your children will have the energy they need to learn lifes lessons.

They will also have energy to do all the things that they want to do, since their bodies will be equipped to handle any of the challenges that they might be setting for themselves.

It is always a wonderful feeling as a parent to know that you are indeed doing the best to ensure your childs health in the best way possible.

Natural health medicine will help you give your children the best start in life that they need. And when they are healthy and happy, they are able to be function at their optimum both at school and when playing at home with friends.

Maybe it is about time that you gave natural medicine a chance to help to keep your child healthy.

Step Up Intelligence in your Child

By smartneurons

So, it is important for both parents but especially mothers to avoid smoking, alcohol, and substance abuse when pregnant and to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It is just not about food and exercise. It is about staying positive in thoughts, keeping a happy frame of mind, exposing the child in the womb to wonderful happy thoughts and music. There are parents who talk to the unborn child and swear that their child is clever and an achiever because of this. Try it, ask your doctors about it.

Changes in Routine Help

Babies as well as toddlers and older kids respond to the stimulus offered by experiences in their home and environment. Did you know that the brain of children is stimulated by the variety of sensations encountered each day?

So, you can set the wheels in motion by introducing activities within the house as well as outdoors. These will promote learning and interactive experiences. Talk to the child as much as you can. Maintain eye contact and allow the child to absorb your facial expressions. Savor every attempt at communication made by the child be it a hand extended towards you, a gurgle, or smile. Create a rapport between you and the child and you will be surprised to see that the child understands and responds.

Food for Thought

It is not just brain-stimulating activities that boost brain power, the food a child eats affects its thinking as well. Did you know, a brain needs plenty of carbohydrates, fats, as well as proteins, vitamins and minerals for both repair as well as function? In fact, many mothers are witness to mood swings and erratic behavior in their children after the consumption of chocolates or junk sugar foods like candy, icing, syrups, and packaged baked products. The sugar highs and lows caused by certain kinds of foods can make a child fidgety, irritable, inattentive, and sleepy.

Sharpen the Intellect

The goal of education is to teach children to be effective thinkers —as you know, this is what equips them to stay ahead in situations where solutions need to be found at the snap of fingers. So, you must focus on cognitive development and higher order thinking.

As a parent there are a great many ways in which you can work towards the goal of effective thinking and higher reasoning. Technology has made available several computer programs, software CDs, and DVDs that are fun to use and place the children in more and more difficult situations, which they need to solve. The focus of companies such as Smart Neurons are educational teaching aids and toys which fulfill the goal of enhancing thinking, mathematical abilities, and problem solving in children.

A Great Learning Experience When Playing Video Games

By Chris Elliott

While many people believe that online video games can increase anti-social behaviors, violence, loss of communication skills, and even health issues, such as obesity, some critics seem to agree that online video games can help the game players increase hand eye coordination. In this sense, it seems to be that most critics have already recognized the beneficial effects of video games in their mind.

Online educational games provide game players brain training that can help them become even more intelligent. These games work by testing the cognitive functions of your brain, such as memory, reasoning, logical decision making, and so fort .Let's visualize yourself working out at a local health club to get your body in shape, playing educational video games is just like taking your brain to the same gym to get mentally in shape.
Educational games are often viewed as boring, un-cool, and primitive, but the truth is that educational games could be as much fun as any other types of game. Often, those educational game player could have a lot more fun because they feel rewarded from the game. Think back to that game of trivia you played with friends a few years ago, do you remember how good you felt when getting the right answer? That's a type of feeling the game player could get from education games. The more people play these games, the greater confidence they have and which could bring them a better chance of succeeding at whatever they set their mind to achieve.

The best place to play free educational video games is on the internet. The internet could provide you a platform for educational learning which never happens before. Educational games have become an interesting and useful for the users. One of significant interests for many users is learning skills that can be applied in their workplace. One example of where this occurs is in the dental field. Many dental websites include online educational games that are both fun, informative, and catered towards user interests. Games could be, for example, Wordsearch, Matching Pair, and Crossword Puzzle. Each game will be fun and interactive for the user to learn real vocational terms that they can also use in their office.
The internet has transcended the traditional boundaries of online games by offering useful, and beneficial and educational contents for the user. After you play a few on line games, ask yourself if you've learned anything new and you will be probably surprised with the answer.

The Benefits of Physical Therapy Exercise

By Groshan Fabiola

One of the most important parts of recovering from a serious accident is with physical therapy exercise. People with debilitating diseases that affect their mobility, coordination and brain function also benefit from physical therapy aide. What many people don't think of is how a rehabilitation program can assist children who are coping with serious problems of their own. There are many benefits to physical therapy for people of all ages who were either born with or later received back, neck, spine, leg or neuromuscular problems.

There are many benefits for children with traumatic brain injuries, developmental delays and muscle problems that receive physical therapy exercise. Not only does physical therapy exercise help people regain mobility, though, but it also helps them to deal with pain. In a nation that is becoming more and more dependant on prescription drugs, finding alternative forms of pain relief is a growing concern. A rehabilitation program may include strength training, stretching exercises, balance and coordination activities, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound therapies. All these treatments help sick and injured children or adults resume normal functions.

Physical therapy specialists are specifically trained in their fields, and they usually work out of hospitals, fitness centers or rehabilitation centers. There are currently more than 7,000 physicians specializing in rehabilitation and physical therapy aide registered with the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Associations in various states can provide a list of licensed practitioners in any area to start a rehabilitation program with. For millions of people across the world, physical therapy exercise has helped enhance the quality of their lives, and taught them how to live with dignity once again.

Diagnosing Learning Disabilities: Is Your Child Exhibiting ADHD Characteristics?

By Tess Thompson

Diagnosing a learning disability or a medical condition like ADHD can be complicated and inexact. In the case of ADHD, many of the telltale symptoms are also often symptoms of regular childhood behavior — restlessness, rowdiness, and a tendency to be easily distracted. ADHD is treated differently from learning disabilities because it is thought to be different in nature. While most learning disabilities can be diagnosed through specific testing, ADHD requires a more subtle diagnosis through comprehensive evaluation.

A learning disability is generally caused by a neurological difference in the brain structure of a child that makes it difficult for him or her to process information in the same way as others. Learning disabilities rarely have anything to do with intelligence level and are generally not treated with medication, as medication can do nothing to change a brains 'wiring,' or structure. Children with learning disabilities have to be trained to compensate for them, and after they are diagnosed, schools can help them by providing extra time on tests or other taking other special measures.

ADHD is not considered to be a learning disability as it is thought to be caused by an absence of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine in parts of the brain, and not necessarily by the brains 'wiring.' Medication can sometimes be used as a successful child ADHD treatment because certain kinds increase the production of neurotransmitters (such as Ritalin), but these medications can also cause disturbing side effects in some children.

In order for your child to be diagnosed with ADHD, he or she must have consistently exhibited ADHD characteristics for an extended period of time and in different environments (school, home, play..etc). Because many of the symptoms of ADHD are also common symptoms of depression or anxiety, the doctor or psychologist evaluating your child will want to make sure that your child is not simply reacting to specific situations. According to the Psychiatric Associations Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which is often used in ADHD research studies, common symptoms include:

-Difficulty organizing tasks and activities

-Often losing things necessary for tasks or activities

-Often easily distracted by outside stimuli

-Not listening when spoken to directly

-Difficulty awaiting turn

-Difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly

There is no single specific test that will diagnose ADHD and each child will exhibit symptoms in a slightly different way. As there are also no genetic indicators of ADHD, diagnosis requires extensive and thorough evaluation. The U.S. Department of Education does not require a clinical diagnosis, which means that for school purposes, if a school allows it, a school psychologist can diagnose ADHD in your child. If after careful consultation you determine that your child does have ADHD, be sure to evaluate multiple behavioral and medical or herbal options for treatment for ADHD before deciding on the one you feel is best for your child.

Tips to Successfully Baby Proofing a Home

By Jake Rose

Babies are very curious and love to get into any place that they can. It is important to make sure cupboards are locked and unable for the child to get into. Not only are chemical containers with toxic materials a very important thing to be careful of, but there are many other everyday items that can provide serious injury to the child through choking or and suffocation. Such items could include small pieces of plastic, cloth, writing utensils, bags, and practically anything and everything.

Once the child becomes really active and starts climbing things, you will have to make sure higher places are not full of dangerous items too. Such places could be draws or racks with shop objects like in the kitchen, bookshelves and desks with heavy objects, and an assortment of places like this.

Electricity is another important thing to keep an eye on. You want to make sure the child cant get to electric chords and sockets. It is also important to be aware of what buttons on certain devices a child may be able to reach. Some could be harmless like a TV, but a few devices might pose a serious risk to a child once turned on or put on certain settings.

Keep an eye on items that have strings and chords. Make sure they are not in reach of the child and make sure no toys have dangerous strings. They could be swallowed or get stuck in the throat, or even more dangerous of a possibility is getting wrapped around the childs neck and strangling them.

Another key item is safety gates to prevent a child from accessing dangerous areas. These areas might be rooms that have too many hazards to the child and cant be properly child proofed otherwise or stairways. Make sure they are installed correctly, firm, and dont have large holes for the child to get stuck in.

Be careful of furniture placement. This is to prevent your child from getting stuck. Children are very curious. Dont put it past your son or daughter to try to squeeze themselves between two pieces of furniture, or even stick their head into the gap to look for something. It doesnt always have to be between two pieces of furniture. It can be between furniture and the wall, furniture and a radiator, furniture and any other large object.

Above all, it is important to keep an eye on the child. Even the best child proofed room can still hold many hazards that are just temporary. In other words, objects that are left behind by other people that cant be child proofed but still dangerous to the young child. Children should be watched at all times. You cant possibly know or remember every single way they can get hurt in each room. But keeping an eye on them not only assures that you will be there to prevent serious injury, but you will also be able to notice places that were overlooked and need childproofing.

Children are very curious and constantly on the go. They are a great responsibility but a joy to the world. Dont overlook anything when it comes to child proofing a house. When it comes to a childs safety, it is better to be too safe than sorry later on.

How to Handle Anxiety in Children

By Sera Redmonds

Of course there are ways to treat anxiety in children, but for that you need to know the nature and behavior of anxiety in them.

Symptoms of a suffering child

*The child may complain of headache and nausea more frequently. *He will perspire and exhibit marked nervous distress. *His thinking and decision-making will be affected. *His blood pressure and heart rate will increase. *The children may vomit, exhibit stomach pain and ulcers, experience diarrhea, or have tingling in the limbs. Shortness of breath in some cases.

Helping your anxious child

There are many ways to treat anxiety disorder in children, but above all, it is extremely important for parents to be patient and understanding. Do not say grow up, as their minds and coping mechanisms are still developing and they need love and support.

In recent years, it is common for the parents of a nervous child to be presented with a list of benzodiazepines or antidepressants. Antidepressants like xanax are effective and helpful but you should not order xanax or buy xanax unless the situation really demands and the doctor prescribes the same for your child. Moreover, there are better ways of treatment available for them.

*It is in the nature of a child to learn through play, play-based therapies have proven extremely effective in getting anxious children to open up and to share the causes of their fears and concerns. Find a cognitive behavioral child psychologist, in whom the child can confide and from whom they can learn coping strategies and calming techniques.

*Often when those issues can be confronted in a safe environment in the company of a trusted adult, the child can overcome their anxieties and move on.

*Anxious children crave routine. To help the child in the home environment emphasize regular eating and sleeping habits.

*Minimize their intake of dietary sugars and chemical food additives as these elements have been found to increase anxiety and agitation in children.

*Parents can help as much as the guidance of a trained therapist in providing a correct amount of support and reinforcement.

No matter how troublesome it appears to treat anxiety in children, parents should not let it pass off as a phase. This is because it tends to underestimate the childs concerns and makes them feel inadequate. Give your child the care and the share of love he deserves to grow up as a healthy and happy adult. Because he is yours, no matter how he is, you are the reason behind his entity.

The author, Sera Redmonds, addresses mental health related issues and anti-anxiety pills like xanax. If you wish to seek help for psychological problems to help yourself or your loved ones, you can log on to xanax-effects.com for more information and advice.
