Time-Out Sucks…Away Your Childs Emotional Security

By B. Bryan Post, PhD, LCSW

Bishop T.D. Jakes says, 'If you always do what youve always done, you will always be where youve already been!' If the dunce chair or standing with your nose in the corner didnt work when we were children, then why do we think by dressing it up as something seemingly more contemporary, that it is going to work now? Many of you may be saying, 'But it does work. All I have to do is start counting to three and my child stops their behavior to avoid time out,' or maybe youre saying, 'If its good enough for Super Nanny, its good enough for me.' Have you seen the new King Kong flick? Well, to a two-year old, an adult looks something like Kong did to the blonde, an utter giant. Wouldnt you sit in a chair for two or three minutes if King Kong told you to do so? Wouldnt you stop your behavior if you knew that if you continued, you would lose the loving support of your most secure attachment figure? Help me understand how it makes sense to send a child whose behavior is clearly communicating that they are unable to manage their current emotional state, to go sit by themselves to sort through their upset emotions, alone. 'Time-out' does not recognize the developmental and regulatory struggles a child is demonstrating in the midst of their behavior of acting out. Consider for a moment that rather than a child acting out for attention, he is in fact, acting out because he needs attention. Read that sentence again. It can make all of the difference. Instead of sending the child off to sit in a chair or be isolated, bring the child into you for a period of time. Have him sit next to you, hold your hand, stand beside you. Say to the child, 'When you are feeling better you may go back and play.' In other words, allow the child to determine how much time-in that he needs. Important point: It is not imperative that you touch the child during this time. A child that does not want to be touched, or reacts violently, should not be touched. In that moment, the child is in survival mode and feels very threatened. Keep your distance, but indicate to the child that you are nearby and will stay so, until the child feels safer.

'Time-in' can be a very effective alternative to 'time-out'. 'Time-in' teaches compassion, regulation, the ability to create internal calm in the midst of stress, and understanding. Before providing 'Time-In' for your child, give some to yourself. Take a moment, find a quiet corner, take four deep breaths, and find your calm, peaceful self. Now you are ready to help calm your child.

The Paternity Testing Process & Your Rights

By Peter Bishop

After taking a paternity test, there are two possible result scenarios. The first would be exclusion, which means that the man is proven not to be the biological father. The second scenario would be inclusion, which means that the man is considered to be the biological father. Modern standard testing provides 99.99% accuracy in paternity inclusions and 100% guarantees of exclusion.

There are at-home tests that can be performed, but these tests can be inconclusive and may not be admissible in a court of law. In order to ensure proper custody, child support and having the child know his/her father with certainty, paternity testing should be done at a medical testing center that can certify the results.

Paternity testing would include the mother, child and the potential father. In most cases, a simple swab of the cheek is used to collect DNA samples. The procedure is painless and requires a minimal amount of time spent at the collection site. The swab is similar to that of a cotton Q-tip, which is rubbed against the inside cheek. Loose cells immediately adhere to the swab, which is later tested for DNA comparison.

After testing, results are often available within one week. This depends on the time of year, demand for testing and other factors. It´s a good idea to make an appointment for testing and follow up if you have not received the results within a week´s time. Once the results are available, the child will then have definite answers as to his/her biological father. If the reason for the test is regarding custody or child support claims, the results will determine the next step.

While legally, it is important for a child to know the identity of both parents, it´s also emotionally important to a child of any age. Growing up without ever knowing a parent can be very troubling for a child and may worsen as they reach adulthood. Even if the parents cannot live together and continue as a family, the child will someday begin to ask questions and want to know about their father. If visitation is at issue, the potential father should petition for a paternity test. If the results are found inclusive, the father must pursue his legal rights to visitation with the child.

Before proceeding with either, a medical doctor and/or attorney should be consulted. Discover More About The Importance of Early Childhood Education

By Steve Bishop

Were you or your children ready for Kindergarten at the age of five years old? Most students pass the physical, emotional, and academic criteria to enter Kindergarten. However, some students have trouble transitioning from preschool to Kindergarten in their early childhood education. These children can benefit from early childhood education programs such as Head Start.

There is a constant debate as to why some students are not ready for Kindergarten like their peers. There are varying circumstances that can cause this to happen. The student may not be emotionally or developmentally ready. Their experiences at home or a physical disability may have impaired their psychological and physical development.

The government, educational organizations, teachers, and parents all play a role in the educational development of each child. When things go wrong, each party tends to point fingers at another party. This can be counterproductive and many times erupts from misunderstanding between the parties.

The government sets specific guidelines and standards for education. For example, President Bush has enacted the "No Child Left Behind Act". The purpose of this act is to have all students achieve a competent to above average educational score. This act is based on positive ideals, but has been found to be very difficult to achieve in the American school system.

This leads to the question of what practices and procedures are the teachers currently administering in the classroom? There are specific standards that must be met in the public school system. Some subjects have national guidelines while others have state by state guidelines.

One of the major requirements for early childhood teachers, as well as teachers of all levels, is to provide developmentally appropriate content and presentation. An example for early childhood teachers is not to expect students to write a two page essay about their summer vacation when they don't even know how to hold a pencil.

Education in the early childhood years tends to focus on motor skills and "play". Children in these years learn greatly through "play". Early childhood teachers take these developmental stages into account when creating lessons and activities. They cover the specified guidelines as determined by their state.

If your child is not ready for Kindergarten it may not necessarily be the fault of their school system. Consult doctors, counselors, and educational professionals to determine the readiness of your child. Your child may have a learning disability that can be treated successfully because it was recognized early. Then your child will be ready to take their first snack of graham crackers and milk as a Kindergarten student.

A Guide To The Importance of Physical Education Programs

By Steve Bishop

A Lifetime of Health The school setting provides a structured atmosphere in which to incorporate physical health activities and ideally develop healthy habits for life. Studies indicate that promotion of a healthy lifestyle taught in physical education classes can influence long-term health benefits such as reduced rates of obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Perhaps just as importantly, physical education programs can teach students that physical activity can be fun. With a broad range of games and activities, children are exposed to forms of exercise that dont simply involve running around a track. Games and other activities incorporate teamwork, strategy, skill-building exercises, and fun.

Nutritional Information Physical education classes are ideal for introducing basic nutritional concepts to children. Poor eating habits are common among many children and adolescents; however, a solid foundation in healthy eating choices can help lay the groundwork for improved food choices. Children who eat regular, healthy meals consisting of a wide range of food choices concentrate better in school and are less disruptive. Healthy eating also decreases the chances of children developing serious health problems early in life and reduces obesity rates among youth and into adulthood.

Life Skills Physical education also provides an opportunity for children to develop critical life skills, such as problem solving, strategy, and working together. Many team sports require participants to work together to achieve a goal. Children also learn the basics of good sportsmanship and that there is much more to sports and physical activities than simply winning or losing. Sports require training, mental and physical preparation, and help build self-confidence.

Mental Health Regular physical activity has shown to have many psychological and mental benefits in addition to the physical ones. For example, regular exercise can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety and promote an overall sense of well-being. The increased blood flow during exercise transports oxygen to all parts of the body, including the brain, which can help improve memory and reasoning skills. Conversely, a lack of oxygen, which can result from not enough deep breathing, can lead to disorientation, confusion, fatigue, and memory and concentration difficulties.

How Old Should You Be Before You Buy A Loft Bed?

By Doug Mahopac

Many parents choose to invest in a loft bed for their child because another child has arrived, is on the way, or currently occupies the house. A loft is a great way to give each child his or her space without having to sacrifice floor space for childs play. Also, a loft bed is a great way to entice your son or daughter to leave your bed in exchange for something a great deal cooler in their eyes.

One thing to keep in mind when choosing a loft bed for a young child is to avoid the ceiling scraping beds and instead choose lofts that are no taller than four feet. This is especially true if you are dealing with a youngster who may have a slight fear of heights, since everything is taller to a child. A four foot loft still allows a great amount of room underneath the bed and can be arranged to house a fantastic fort, tent, or enclosed space that is only for the child. Some childrens furniture manufacturers are even including specialized loft beds into their furniture designs that are sure to tickle your childs imagination.

Another critical aspect to keep in mind is the safety of the loft. Ensure the guard rails are stable and properly placed on the bed. Furthermore, ensure both sides of the bed come equipped with guard rails. Quite often, children can become trapped or even fall out of the bed if two guard rails are not present on the bed. Also, check out the ladder to make sure your child will be safe while entering and exiting his or her bed. Furthermore, ensure the ladder is correctly installed on the bed to prevent any accidents or injuries due to improper equipment.

Once your child has made the move into a loft bed, make time to speak with your son or daughter regarding safety. Set rules for entering and exiting the bed and ensure your children will not play or roughhouse, which can call potentially cause injury.

Home School Resource - Help With High School Homeschooling

By Rebecca Welch

The Money Factor

Expenses generally skyrocket in the last few years with more challenging textbooks to purchase and additional after school activities. Some cities have homeschooling co-ops established to help parents cope with the rising cost of education. Local libraries can be an excellent informational resource and also give other homeschoolers a place to meet or share advice. One of the best low cost options is to join the local home school organization and share textbooks with other parents as often as possible to defray the expense.

Do you have an advanced student?

Teaching an advanced student can be scary, but parents should be proud of what they have helped their child accomplish. Online home schooling resources can be a great help for the advanced student. Many challenging curriculums can be purchased and completed online with tutoring help available when necessary. Online academies often provide textbooks and other home schooling supplies. Virtual classrooms where students can use a web cam to participate in class is another excellent alternative. They may also use lecture based courses online.

Post Secondary Option for Advanced Students

Post secondary level classes at your local university or junior college have some advantages for your student. Your child can avoid the stigma of being the new kid because college faces change every semester. At times you might not be required to pay college tuition for the classes that your high school child takes. Your child can earn high school credit and enjoy socialization as well as mental stimulation that college classes provide.

Transferring your homeschooler to private or public school?

For many parents, home schooling a high school age child can be extremely difficult. Some feel they should transition their child to a private or public high school, however, the stress of the transition can wreck havoc on a teenager. Public high school environments can seem unfriendly, stilted and restrictive to a child who has had theloving support and educational flexibility of being homeschooled. Private school could be an alternative, but there are still the drawbacks of public schools plus the added burden of cost with a private institution. In addition to adjusting to a new environment, if you decide to transition your homeschooled teenager you must also be mindful of the 'new kid' syndrome that so often occurrs. This can be especially difficult for homeschooled children who may be viewed as 'weird' or 'strange' by both students and teachers alike. Weigh your options carefully before plunging your child back into mainstream education.

Are there any additional options?

Feeling uncertain or over-whelmed about home schooling your senior high school student is normal. If transitioning your homeschooled child to public or private high school isnt an option, you might consider the following options. Network with other parents who home school their children. Have each parent discuss what they feel they are best at teaching. Find parents who would be willing to trade skills in order to gain the best education for their children. A parent who is skilled in Math or Science and enjoys teaching high school age students might be willing to teach your child in exchange for teaching one of their children English or a foreign language. In this way, both students will benefit from additional stimulation and extra socialization.

Helping Your Child Become A Reader

By Mary Joyce

Even more specifically, the foundation from which to build the foundation for this success is reading. How well your child learns to - and enjoys reading, is absolutely directly related to not only how well your child will do in school, but how successful they will be throughout their lifetime. When a child develops good reading skills they have developed a foundation on which all other learning is built upon.

From the day a child is born they begin to learn. From the moment you begin to talk or sing to your new baby they begin to hear and to respond to sounds. The more your talk and sing to your child, the more you strengthen and advance their understanding of language. You are laying the first blocks for your child to becoming a reader.

As a parent you yourself dont have to be the worlds best reader in order to help your child become a successful reader. It is your time, your interest, your enthusiasm, and your dedication to your childs success that is important. Remember, it is reading that is the essential element that all other learning is dependent upon.

Every child learns to read at different paces. It is a step by step process with each step mastered leading to the next.

Early on babies and toddlers learn primarily by experiencing the sights and sounds that become a part of their world. Babies are natural born curiosity seekers and learners. They are in a constant explore and discover mode. As a parent you should take great advantage of this natural desire.

As a part of this early discovery and leaning stage babies quickly learn to imitate those events that they both see and hear. So, right from the beginning, parents should be reading, singing, gesturing, smiling and making funny faces with their children. Believe it or not, these are the very first activities that begin to establish a childs path toward understanding the language and ultimately begin reading.

So you see, even though your baby hasnt officially began learning to read in a structured manner, becoming an eventual good reader starts from the first day your child begins to hear what is to become their primary language. The first steps of translating sounds into words, words to sentences, and sentences to meanings is, in a sense, the foundation for the foundation of reading.

Mary Joyce is a former educator, successful homeschool parent, and has written many articles on Homeschool Curriculum for the Homeschool-Curriculum-4u website. Helping Your Kids Use Social Networking Websites Safely

By Gabriel Adams

On most social networking websites, children can post profiles that include videos, photos, and personal information such as their address, phone number, birthday, and full names. Kids use these sites to connect with others, whether theyre halfway around the world or right next door. The sites often allow for instant messaging, games, and other communication tools.

Unfortunately, some of the information posted on social networking sites could make your child vulnerable to predators. Keep reading for five great ways to help your child use social networking websites safely.

1. Dont use full names. If youre going to allow your child to use social networking sites, have them use a nickname or their first name, but never full names.

2. Monitor your childs profile. Insist on access to view and monitor your childs public page. Check for any private personal information, such as addresses or cell numbers, that could pose a security risk to your child.

3. Never allow your child to meet anyone in person who theyve only met online. Children can be in serious danger if they go to meet people whom theyve only met through the Internet.

4. Consider setting site restrictions. Most social networking sites allow users to set privacy settings, therefore making their profiles available only to certain approved users. This is a good way to limit access to your childs information.

5. Remove the page. If your child refuses to abide by your safety rules, consider contacting the web site and having the page removed or investigating the use of Internet filtering tools to block access to the site.

Help Your Child Play And Grow With The Educational Toys And Games

By Len Jacob

There can be basically two types of education, one is formal, the other informal education. Now, formal education will include entry to a school or any other educational institution. Informal education occurs outside school guided by people and resources outside the classroom.

Introduce educational toys and game to your child and voila, an informal learning ambience is created. Children are natural learners, so your task as a parent will be to provide them with toys that have the fun as well as the educational quotient. The ideal toys and games will help the all round development of your children. However, there are differences in the emotional and reasoning development of different children.

Remember that the educational toy and game should be compatible with the childs individual personality. As the children grow older, they require educational games and toys that are appropriate for their age. For instance, a child in the adolescent stage may be going through emotional turmoil, as a parent, you can engage your child into chess or sports. Informal education is a way to strengthen formal education.

Educational games for children at various stages of their development

A baby learns to experience taste, touch, smell, hearing and seeing right from infancy. Make use of this. Use the language games and for this you need to talk to your baby repetitively. The baby recognizes a particular word and learns to utter it.

As your baby gets older, you can gift them educational toys and games like crayons, blocks, hand puppets, mobiles, stacking toys, easy puzzles and more. All these toys help to develop spatial awareness, motor skills, recognition of different sounds and language skills, if you keep talking to the baby. No matter, what toys or games your baby is playing, make it a point to talk to your baby always. Just talk, talk and talk, it will be fun for your baby and simultaneously help in learning the language.

Maintain the fun element when teaching your baby. Be sure to clap and applaud when your baby points out to an object and calls it by its name; this further encourages your baby to learn and makes the entire learning process an enjoyable one. Therefore, never think that the childs playtime is merely a pass time, but make use of the opportunity for the better of your child.

Some of the best educational toys for your child

· Fisher Prices Laugh and Learn Home: This is an essential educative toy for children above 6 months. The product teaches your child a number of things that will really keep your child interested till the age of one year.

· LeapFrogs LeapStart Learning Table: This educational toy provides your child lots of fun and has different games in only one fajita. The child comes to know music, colors and alphabets.

· LeapFrogs Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter Set: Your toddler will love this educational toy that features interactive alphabet figures coupled with a magnetic reader. This is attachable to any surface that can hold magnets like the refrigerator. It can also play a song to entertain your baby.

If you are confused regarding which educational toy to opt for, just ask the toy store attendant for his/her advice. Also get a demonstration of the toy and then decide finally whether you think your child will love it.

Golf - Teaching Your Child How To Play

By Jason Carter

Children are now discovering what many adults already know: golf is a lot of fun! While your children may love hitting golf balls with one of your old golf clubs, how do you begin to develop their skills? Here are a few tips to help you give your children a good head start in the golfing world.

One of the first things you may want to do is enroll them into a golf class. Many of your local golf courses have classes just for children. There is no need to go out and buy a new set of golf clubs for your child. The class will provide the equipment necessary. This will not only save you some money right now, but it will give you time to find out if your child truly enjoys the game of golf or not. You dont want to go out and spend a few hundred dollars only to find out your child doesnt really like golf after all.

The next tip is one that is very important for both you and your child. Be patient. It is so easy to want to see your child start hitting long drives and sinking 30 foot putts. In order for them to want to continue learning the game of golf they need your support. Let your child progress at their rate. The golf classes will help them develop immensely.

When you are on the practice range with them be sure you encourage them, even when they are spraying the ball all over the range. They will pick up the finer points of the game later as they grow older.

When your child has taken some classes and they show a genuine interest in the game of golf, buy them their own set of golf clubs. Be sure you have your child fitted properly. Of course, since they will be growing in height and weight, understand that the clubs you buy today may be too small within a year or two at the most. You can get childrens golf clubs at an inexpensive price.

Use the time that you spend golfing with your children as a bonding time. Enjoy yourselves and the time youre out on the course. You can even use this time to develop a good communication with your child. Talk about other things than golf. Youll be surprised at how the golf course can help you and your children bond together. It will spill over into other areas of your lives as well.

Your child may never grow up to be the next Tiger Woods, or Michelle Wie, but they can grow up loving the game of golf. More importantly, they can grow up enjoying the time spent together with you out on the golf course.

Jason is a pro golfer. Learn more about this spetacular golf and get discounts for some products. http://www.freewebs.com/smithkarl/DaveBlogs.htm

Free Child Seat Checks By Insurance Company

By Joe Thompson

The campaign would include a free child safety seat check. This event would be done on the 26th of this month. From 9am to 1pm, parents can start rushing towards the event and learn about child safety and child safety seats. Parents could also learn more about the importance of safety on the road as well as the importance of Volkswagen auto parts in keeping the passengers safe during unwanted incidents.

Gary Brown is GEICOs regional vice president for the companys operations in Texas. Brown comments, 'A big part of our job at GEICO is helping provide safety information for our customers. We want to extend the same knowledge to the community so that the Dallas Fort Worth area becomes a safer place for all of us, especially our youngsters. We feel it is necessary to spread the message of child car seat safety because, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 73 per cent of child restraints are used incorrectly.'

This statement from Brown is also backed up by Miriam Wilhelm. Wilhelm is an instructor on child passenger safety at the Presbyterian Hospital. Wilhelm also is the coordinator for Safe Kids Collin County. She further adds insight by saying, 'Its a parents responsibility to make sure a childs car seat is properly installed and adjusted. Were here to show you how. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of children under 14, and under Texas state law, all children under 5 years of age and 36 inches must be restrained in a appropriate car seat or booster seat.'

Joe Thompson is the owner of a successful auto body shop in Ferndale, California. This 38 year old is also a prolific writer, contributing automotive related articles to various publications.

Finding a Dora the Explorer Gift

By Jared Winston

Obviously, this problems solution relies heavily on your knowledge of your childs preferences. If they have a favorite character from the Dora cast, then your job may become a bit easier. Or if, for instance, they prefer a certain kind of toy or game, or enjoy story books, then that too will help you in picking out what to get them. You may also want to consider trying to get some of this information from your child in conversation, as that could easily save you a great deal of time and frustration in the long run.

If your child is approaching the age at which they are learning how to read, or if they simply enjoy having stories read to them, then you may want to consider buying your child a few Dora the Explorer story books. There are a wide variety of picture books to choose from, each one with a plot that is guaranteed to be fun, and maybe even teach your child a thing or two. You may also want to consider a few of these books for the subject matter they deal with. For instance, if your child has a new sibling on the way, there is a Dora book on that subject which might help with any feelings of insecurity. There are also some books that focus on the educational aspect more.

There are, of course, a large variety of Dora the Explorer toys that you can choose from. There are several different varieties of puzzles, ranging in difficulty from simple puzzles of around 12 pieces, to ones which have 48 or so, meaning you can find puzzles for whatever skill level your child might be comfortable with. If they prefer dolls to puzzles, there is a large selection of figures and play sets such as the Animal Rescue Adventure set, which has Dora and her cousin Diego rescue a jaguar cub. There is also a Lego play set that allows your child to build a playground for Dora and Boots to play in. The pieces are all very simple and easy to assemble, so you will not have to worry about it being too difficult.

Lastly, you may want to consider buying your child one of the Dora the Explorer music CDs that are available. These CDs contain all the upbeat music your child knows from the Dora cartoon, and much more, which is sure to keep them going for hours.

From its origins as a cartoon series to its release of Dora the Explorer dolls and other assorted merchandise, one thing cannot be denied: Dora has become a blockbuster hit. If youre a fan of Dora or would like to learn more about her, stop by our Dora the Explorer fansite.

Educational Toys For Toddlers

By Low Jeremy

Well, if you have, then Im sure that these five tips will be a big help to you in choosing the best toy to give — toys that are fun but still educational.

Tip number one is to be sure that you are buying a toy that really is for a toddler. Sometimes we may over-estimate them and treat them like bigger children.

But no matter what many may think, you should still buy a toy that fits in the age range of a toddler. If you buy a toy that isnt, there is a large possibility that the child wont like it. Also, try not to buy toys with detachable parts because the child might swallow it.

Tip number two is to choose something that will help the child build abilities or skills that aid them, when they grow up, in their academics. Remember that a child will be at his or her best when he or she is open to letters, numbers and sounds at a young age.

So that the child will be interested, you can look for blocks, books, flashcards or puzzles with bright colors. Some toys can even talk to children. These kind of toys are a big help to the children.

The third tip is to make sure that the child as well as the parent will like it. Look for something like a book. You can easily spot toddler books because they are usually made from cardboard and are colorful.

Some books have sounds and they recite nursery rhymes. Some have pop-ups and fur for the kids to touch. It is better for parents to read to their child, to show the child that learning is very much important.

Fourth is not to be carried away. Remember that giving the biggest and best gift isnt the most important part of a present. Choose something that wont empty your pockets but will still fill the happiness of the child. Give a gift that will help them in learning at the same time be enjoyable.

The last tip is to always be creative. When you shop for the toy, think of something original yet not too weird.

In short, when you are choosing a gift in a toy store, remember that the toy you are about to give should be creative and interesting. Remember that it should fit the age of the child. Just dont forget to wrap the gift, and dont give it bare to the toddler!

Educational Toy Ideas For Your Preschooler

By Amy Nutt

When choosing an educational toy, you want to be sure it will serve its educational purpose. You want your child to learn something while playing with a particular toy, and for that to remain a popular one with your preschooler for a reasonable amount of time. This is why you should choose carefully.

When selecting educational toys, it is also important to keep your childs interests in mind. Remember, it isnt the educational factor that will interest your child, rather the fun the toy will bring. Encourage your child to play with different toys and learn new things, but always try to give preference to the more educational preschool-level toys, whether they teach basic math or reading skills, color recognition, or just stimulate different parts of a childs developing brain. After all, these simple, educational games can often be the most entertaining. Chalkboards are among the most popular toys for preschoolers. They are also among the oldest. And since many modern chalkboards are double-sided– with a chalkboard on one side and a magnetic board for plastic letters on the other, this toy can also serve a dual purpose. By playing with it, your child will be able to learn the letters of the alphabet with the magnetic letters, and then be able to practice those letters on the chalkboard once this is accomplished. It also allows for free-hand drawing and hours of creative fun.

Toy pianos are also among the most popular and most beneficial toys. As shown in recent studies, children who learn music, even on the most basic level, tend to perform better in math and science-oriented subjects, and also tend to score higher on scholastic exams. Aside from that, this kind of toy is a great way for your child to be creative while making his or her very own music.

Blocks have long been among the most basic, yet most fun toys a child can own. There are many types from which to choose, from blocks that interlock, to those that simply balance on one another. Your child will have hours of fun building towers, houses, or just simply learning to stack and count.

No matter which educational toys you choose, be sure they are age-appropriate for your child. Check to be sure they dont have loose parts that could be harmful to your child, and that they arent too complicated for his or her age and education level. You do not want your child to become discouraged by playing with a toy he or she does not understand. Also, play with your children. If you show an interest in the toys you buy, they are more likely to do the same.

Educational Software For Teaching Children

By Rebecca Walker

Toddlers

When your child is not yet able to read or write, dont feel that it is not possible to educate them and make them learn processes and other learning mechanisms which they can benefit from for the rest of their life. Many parents believe that teaching their child at this stage is far less valuable than teaching them practical applications of their skills in later years. However, one of the best ways to teach your child, at this age, can be through using educational software that has been designed on the back of decades of research surrounding how young children digest information and benefit from it in the long term. On one level, through using educational software, your children will become far more computer savvy than they otherwise would. They will be accustomed to how one can engage with a user interface through a control pad or keyboard. This, of course, is far from the only benefit. Educational software is usually designed to be fun for children and enhance their learning at the same time. If you decide to explore the educational software with your child, and also let them engage with it on their own, you can also help to develop a bond with your child.

Young Children

Young children can use educational software to further enhance their IT skills on one level. However, they can also use it as a means of being taught new, and the same things, in an innovative way that is proven to have results. Educational software adds a new dimension to how children are taught, other than by their parents and at school, which can ultimately reinforce what they already know and help them to understand things that they were otherwise having problems with at school. It is important that you do not just use educational software to keep your child up-to-date with the curriculum - you should also use it as a means of developing their learning and problem solving skills.

Teens

When your child reaches their teenage years, educational software can still play a massive role in how your child develops. When they get to this age, they can use educational software to learn general knowledge, problem solving skills and subject specific learning. This means that instead of learning how to read, for example, they can learn about historic events and how to calculate maths problems. These are things that they can be taught through software, because they now have the platform in place - in terms of reading, writing and, arithmetic skills - to develop and learn.

Do Dollar Signs Limit Your Childs Education

By George Phillips

While teaching salaries vary greatly from state to state, child education is improving from the under paid teachers of the past 10 years. It is sad to realize that dollar signs may limit child education if you happen to live in a state with low teacher salaries, or where the states schools are short on teaching funds.

Another aspect which limits child education in the public school system, is the unfairness of the teacher hiring process. You would think that your school would want to hire the most qualified teachers, but that is often not what happens. The way our schools are set up, it is possible for an individual to control who gets hired and who does not. And many times has a vested interest in the outcome as well.

For instance local (Teacher A)… has a Masters Degree in education, is very sharp, enthusiastic, pleasant personality, married with 3 children of her own, and totally committed to child education. Having made a career commitment to be a teacher.

(Teacher B)… on the otherhand just completed enough schooling to be able to teach, not really sure even if she wants to be a teacher, just looking for a job, and lives out of state where they went to college. So why is your local schools hiring Teacher B, and not Teacher A?

Do you want your childs education in the hands of a teacher like B, when a teacher like A has applied, lives in your city, is available locally to teach your child, and is not being hired…

Do not think for a minute this is not happening in your local schools, it happens every year in almost every school district… Your sons and daughters education is important, and the best child education teacher for the job… may be the waitress at your local steak house, who was not hired as a teacher by your school! It is your duty to get involved and find out what is going on in your schools hiring program.

Dont Let Your Child Be The Fat Kid

By Lyn Leckie-Matassa

Chances are you have a child that needs to be encouraged and enticed into some kind of physical activity. However even if your child is of small stature but does no exercise this is just as unhealthy as a child that is overweight and does no exercise. Lets face it there are people out there that can eat and eat and dont have to exercise and never put on weight and others that eat the same amounts and put on weight but that is a fact of life that is unfair but true. If you look at all the food calorie counters it all comes down to energy in energy out and that is the key.

What you eat need to be burnt off so those people that eat and eat actually do more physical activity than the one that gains allot of weight. The reason I say this is because the books all say if you dont do any activity at all during the day you can have this many calories and if you do a walk or run or 30 minutes of physical activity you can have allot more calories.

The key is healthy food and exercise but without letting your child know what you are doing gradually change the foods that you are giving your child to eat. Buy them a skipping rope, balls , hoola hoop anything that is designed to make physical activity fun. Get out and play with them it wont hurt you to get in a bit of extra exercise but it is also quality time with your kids. I know you probably have a very hectic schedule but go out there start them off then do what you need to do inside in a place where you can see what they are doing and encourage them so they will keep going because when the exercise thing is new to them they will get the urge to stop and go back to the TV. Persist and you wont have to worry about your child being labelled the fat kid anymore.

Educate Your Child on Smoking

By Tony Robinson

1. Generally a child learns from the habits of his parents. If you are a smoker then the foremost step needs to be taken by you. Get yourself free from the smoking habit and try to figure out the bad effects of smoking in front of your child. If a child sees his parents using good manners like eating healthy food then he is likely to follow those good habits. On the contrary if he sees his parents smoking, he surely takes up that. Only verbal explanation would not help. You have to practically put them.

2. Talk to your kids. You can start with explaining them functions of heart and lungs and how bad habits harm their smooth functioning. Insert a mental picture of the outcomes. Instead of praising the smoking trend, try to criticize actors who smoke in movies and T.V programs. Make sure you do that in front of your kids.

3. Tell him about the harmful effects that smoking leads to like it blocks the bloodstreams, robs the face charm, causes pale look. Try to encourage kids more abut good habits by telling them about its consequences like healthy skin, active body, physical fitness.

4. Help your child to get involve in the activities in which they are interested. A child should learn to develop an optimist point of view towards life. Encourage them to make good friends and not to get involve in bad company. Appreciate your youngsters on their good deeds and also not forget to scold them on their bad ones. Do not pamper them. Your child should be able to judge between right and wrong so they are able to say no to their bad habits when the trying time comes.

5. Spend some good time with your ward. Be aware of your child activities. Talk to him about different topics. Start with asking him how he spent his day. All you need is the tact to handle your kid with care.
